PROVO — Mrs. Catherine Smith Bassett, 78, widow of William E. Bassett, died Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. Earl Pardue, 160 South First East Street, of causes incident to age.
She was born August 19, 1861, in Logan, a daughter of Thomas X. and Margaret Gurney Smith. She received her education in Logan and was married to Mr. Bassett In 1886 in Logan L. D. S. Temple.
In 1900 they moved to Provo, where Mr. Bassett served as manager of the Knight Woolen Mills. Mrs. Bassett helped organize the Provo Fifth Ward Relief Society. They moved to San Francisco in 1911. Mrs. Bassett assisted in development of the San Francisco branch church and served as president of the Relief Society. They returned to Ogden in 1918 and Mr. Bassett died there in 1919.
She is survived by a daughter and three sons, Mrs. T. Earl Pardue of Provo, William E. Bassett of New York; Dr. R. S. Bassett of Hayward, California; Dr. E. S. Bassett of Long Beach, California; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and six sisters, Mrs. Lucy Cardon, Mrs. Emma Ballif, Alice, Florence, Drue and Hattie Smith, all of Logan.
