Notities over John Bishop

Our Bishop Ancesters, pg 6-7

Rev. John Bishop
, 1610 - 1694

Rev. John Bishop, our immigrant ancestor, was baptized at
Chattistock, County Dorset, England, May 3, 1610, seventh of William
and Alice Dunning Bishop's eleven children. Only his Baptisimal date
is on record In Hutchin's "History of County Dorset".
Lower Holway, England, the.birthplace of Rev. John Bishop, was
a manor consisting of eight messauges, eight orchards, eight gardens
and 359 acres of land. This was granted to William Bishop and John
Daw, Jr., and their heirs. In 1620, the manor was granted to Richard
Bishop of London, eldest of John's six.brothers, and continued l n the
family u n t i l i t was sold by William Bishop, Esq., and at least four
generations of Bishops lived in Holway.
Seventeen ships crossed the Atlantic in I63O bringing immigrants
from England to New England. One was the Mayflower, one of eleven
ships in John Wlnthrope's fleet. There was some belief f i f t y years
or longer ago that the f i r s t of our line of Bishops--In America came
on the Mayflower at a later date than her 1620 voyage.
John Bishop was ln Taunton, Massachusetts.as early as 1640,
according to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England. There
he studied for the ministry, and taught school.
In 1644 he was called as the second minister for the First
Congregational Church in the new settlement of Stamford, Connecticut.
Rev. Bishop's parish was large and the problems he encountered sometimes
taxed his Christian fortitude almost to the breaking point. A
new church was built in I67I. The rule of seating the inhabitants in
the church was according to their "dignity, age and estate in this
present l i s t of estate", was rather quaint compared to the customs today.
The sixty pounds granted him for the year 1680 was paid in pork,
wheat and Indian com, " a l l good and merchantable."
In I667 his estate was freed from the annual minister's tax. In
1684 he received, a grant of 200 acres of land and the town settled a
maintainance upon him in 1692, to be paid yearly.
A number of his letters to Increase Mather (President of Harvard,
I685-I70I), under whom he pursued his theological studies earlier, are
on record i n the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. In
one he spoke of Mather's books saved from a f i r e that destroyed his
home and thanked him for his kindness to "my sister Lake" (actually
his wife's sister), whose husband, Captain Thomas Lake had lost hisl
i f e in the f i r e . In another letter he regretted that his children
were not.getting good education.
Rev. John Bishop was f i r s t married in Stamford about 1644 to.
Rebecca Goodyear, who was born in London about 1626, eldest daughter
of Stephen and Mary Goodyear. She was the mother of ten children.
After her death ln I67O, he married Joanna Boyce.about 1680, born in
York, County Halifax, England, about 1602. She was the daughter of
Rev.'John and Joanna Boyce, the widow (.1) of Rev. Peter Prudden,
7
father of her eight children, widow (2) of Captain Thomas Willet,
f i r s t English mayor of New York, a man of wealth and standing, who
died ln 1674, Joanna died after 1681 i n Stamford, Connecticut. She
willed her estate in England to her children and directing that "my
silver tankard shall be delivered to my dear husband, Mr. John
Bishop."
Rev. John Bishop was a man of impressive "stature who can correctl
y be called one of the founders of America. Pride in our heritage
i s reflected ln the sketches of some of his descendents i n Huntington
Ts History of Stamford, Connecticut, and Men of Note i n Connecticut,
who put i t i n the records that they descended from Rev. John
Bishop, second minister of Stamford.. He i s the subject of three
bookst
1- Rev. John Bishop of the Massachusetts and Connecticut
Colonies-
2- Some Descendants of John Bishop of Stamford, Connecticut
3- Some Descendants of Rev. John Bishop
The history of Surnames l n the British Isles say Bishop did not
derive from church festivals, but was a personal name in the Doomsday
Book, 1086. Sometime before 1400 when John Bysshop, Esq., the f i r st
of our ancestors we have any record of, lived i n England, i t became
a surname.
The coat of arms.was granted to William Bishop, believed to be
the father of John Bishop, August 10, 1627, by Sir William Segar,
Knight of the Garter.

I appreciate you erecting this memorial for Rev. John Bishop, to whom a person has
created and linked his 2nd wife Joanna, latter who I am most interested in. May I make
some suggestions that would help eliminate much of the false writing about him on the web
(i.e., he was a Episcopal priest, he was a Presybterian, etc.). First, the following
short bio:

John Bishop, born and baptized at Cattistock, May 3, 1610 (7th son of William and Alice)
received his B. A. degree at age 20 from Balliol College, Oxford, and his M.A. degree
Apr. 15, 1635. As a young man, he decided to migrate to New England and settled at
Taunton, Massachusetts where he was a schoolmaster in 1640. He went to Stamford,
Connecticut in 1644 to serve as the 2nd minister of the First Congregational Church. He
married 1) Rebecca Goodyear at Stamford circa 1645, the mother of all his children, who
died at Stamford in 1671. Following Rebecca's death, he married 2) Joanna Boyes, the
former widow of Rev. Peter Prudden of Milford, Conn. and Capt. Thomas Willett of Swansea,
Mass. Joanna died at Stamford in early 1683.

Rev. Bishop served the First Congregational Church of Stamford for fifty years through
many difficult and trying times in the Colonies. He died in 1694 at the age of 84, a much
respected and beloved clergyman. In his will dated Novemeber 16, 1694, proved March 12,
1694/5, he requested to be buried between his two wives Rebecca and Joanna, who he said
with confortable assurance are fallen asleep in Jesus and gone to Heaven before me.

Where Rev. Bishop and his two wives were first interred is unknown. His existing memorial
stone photographed here and located at Stamford's Saint Johns and Saint Andrews Episcopal
Cemetery was erected as a memorial more than 150 years after his death by some of his
descendants who where then members of the Episcopal Church.

I would also ask that you include in the "transcription" portion of your
memorial the following, which to the best of my ability of your photo says, but you may
have additional means to complete or re-edit it:
