Notities over Nathaniel Tilden

The Ancestry of Joseph Neal 1769 - c1835 of Litchfield Maine

3. NATHANIEL3 TILDEN (Thomas,2 Richard1) was baptized
at Tenterden, county Kent, July 28, 1583. He married, about
1608, presumably at Tenterden although no record survives
there, Lydia Huckstep. With her and their children he emigrated
to New England and settled in Scituate, where he died
in 1641. His widow, Lydia, soon married Timothy Hatherly,
the leading citizen of Scituate, and survived him when he died
on October 24, 1666.
Tilden was a man of considerable local prominence in Tenterden,
serving the town as its mayor in 1622 and being a jurat,
or justice, in the years 1624, 1625, 1627 and 1629 and very
probably in the intervening years.
Lydia (Huckstep) Tilden, his wife, was baptized at Tenterden
on February 11,1587/8, the daughter of Stephen and Winifred
(Hatch) Huckstep, who were married at Tenterden on February
14, 1584/5. Winifred Hatch was a daughter of Thomas
and Joan Hatch of Tenterden, and, at the time of her marriage
to Stephen Huckstep, was the widow of Richard Wills whom
she had married on June 18, 1576. Stephen Huckstep, father of
Mrs. Tilden, was buried at Tenterden June 20, 1633. Lydia Tilden's
uncle, John Huckstep, in his will, made November 4, 1624,
left £5 to "my kinswoman Lydia Tilden, wife of Nathaniel
Tilden."t
The Tildens, holding certificates from Mr. John Gee, vicar of
Tenterden, Jno. Austin, the town's mayor, and Fregift Stace,
jurat, sailed for America in the Hercules of Sandwich, county
Kent, 200 tons, John Witherley, master, with a group of friends
and neighbors. Mr. Gee's certificate was dated February 26,
1634, and that of the mayor and jurat March 4, 1634. With their father and mother, the children are listed—Joseph, Thomas,
Stephen, Marie, Sara, Judeth, Lidia—and seven servants,
Thomas Lapham, George Sutton, Edward Ford, Edward Jeakins,
Sara Couchman, Mary Perien and James Bennett. Whatever
the regrets and sadnesses of their parents, sailing-day was
doubtless one of happy excitement for the youngsters.
Arrived in New England, Tilden went immediately to Scituate,
to a great extent a Kentish community, and settled on the
"two mile tract," now known as North Marshfield, his farm being
on both sides of North river and on the sea. He was soon
elected elder of the church presided over by Rev. John Lothrop,
and, as his library indicates a strong interest in Puritan theology,
he doubtless enjoyed the controversy which engaged the
attention of the Scituate brethren.
If the date can be believed, Tilden had bought land in Scituate
on April 10, 1628, a deed of Henry Merritt, planter, conveying
to him "all the land which I had of Goodman Byrd lying
within the fence at the North end of the third cliff." It seems
more probable that 1628 was a mis-writing or mis-reading of
1638, however. He bought five acres in the third cliff from John
Emerson in 1636, nine acres of marsh at New Harbor from the
same grantor in 1639, and two acres of marsh from William
Crocker in 1638.*
In 1637 Tilden and Timothy Hatherly were appointed the
Plymouth Colony's commissioners to treat with two representatives
of Massachusetts Bay to determine the boundary between
the two colonies. They were, however, unable to come to any
agreement.
In the court records he appears only twice—two actions on
the case—one against Comfort Starr in the sum of £100 and
the other against Henry Ewell.

The inventory of his estate contains several interesting items
in addition to the usual fittings of house and farm. There are a
musket, a sword and a "birding-peece," a great quantity of
linen, thirteen silver spoons. The books number about forty-five,
a very large number, including a great Bible, the Book of Martyrs,
Calvin and many commentaries. Ten hives of bees were
valued at £1 apiece.
Lydia Tilden gave her children for a step-father one of the
most distinguished men in the colony. Timothy Hatherly had
been a member of the Merchant Adventurers in London who
financed the voyage of the Mayflower and stood behind the Pilgrims
in their new-world venture. He had made several visits to
Plymouth before he came for good in 1633 and settled in Scituate.
A man of extraordinary generosity, he gave the parsonage
house and land to the church in 1654 and seven years later
added his Musquaschcut farm and buildings to the gift. This
was only one of many benefactions. He was treasurer of Plymouth
Colony, councillor or assistant for thirteen years and a
commissioner of the United Colonies for three years. In 1658 he
took a firm stand against the persecution of the Quakers, thereby
displeasing Governor Prince and the Council and bringing
about his own retirement from the government.* A few days before
his death on October 24, 1666, Hatherley conveyed to his
step-son, Joseph Tilden, his homestead farm and one hundred
and thirty of the four hundred acres that had been laid out to it,
all the real estate he possessed, with the stipulation that he and
his wife might possess it for the remainder of their lives. His will
left to his wife his silver plate, pewter and brass, linen, furniture,
a gray mare, two cows and two oxen. To her children
Lydia Garrett, the wife of George Sutton, the widow Preble
and Stephen Tilden went legacies of £5 and less, and several of
her grandchildren were also remembered. Joseph Tilden was
named executor and declined to serve, but was appointed administrator
by the court. It was not an easy task, for Thomas
Hanford, a nephew of Hatherly's, displeased with his uncle's partiality for the Tildens, sought to set aside deed and will,
and the matter was not settled until 1673. "Mistress Hatherley"
was still living at the age of eighty-two when her son
Joseph died in 1670.
