Subject: [KY-CEM] Drakes Creek Cemetery Re-dedication - Lincoln Co. KY
Date: Fri, 28 Jun 2002 7:40:47 -0400
Drakes Creek Cemetery, sometimes called the old Pettus burying ground, is located on the farm of Cecil Smith, near Preachersville. This is one of the oldest community burial grounds in Lincoln County KY. A Revolutionary War veteran is buried there. William Graves (1768-1852) fought under the command of Anthony Wayne. Civil War veteran Rueben Payne is also buried at Drakes Creek. This one-acre burying ground is also the final resting-place of many ancestors of current residents of Lincoln County, as well as many residents of surrounding counties. The cemetery is situated on a hill in a grove of trees near Crab Orchard Pike and Fall Lick Road. Access to the cemetery is, with the permission of the farm owner, through a farm gate on Fall Lick Road. Visitors must cross the creek which is to the right of the gate and then up the hill to the cemetery.
In the late 1970s, Mrs. Shirley Dunn catalogued many of the graves for inclusion in a book entitled Lincoln Co. Marriages (1780-1850) and Tombstone Inscriptions. More names have been added to her list from family records that listed burial at Drakes Creek. Several years ago, the Anderson Family Reunion group took it upon themselves to fence this farm cemetery with the permission of the owner, Cecil Smith. Through genealogical records, the Anderson researchers determined that there were several Anderson ancestors buried there. This same group had fenced a family cemetery on a farm in Garrard County and placed a new memorial marker there to honor their first Kentucky ancestor, Archelus Anderson (1766-1835) several years prior to fencing Drakes Creek Cemetery. It was because of that endeavor that they saw fit to do the same for this old community cemetery. The Anderson group sees this as an opportunity to pay tribute to their ancestors who pioneered the settlement of the counti!
es in this area. If not for them and their work and sacrifices, we would not be here today.
The Anderson Family Reunion takes place every two years. After the last reunion in August 2000, the family placed an order with the Stanford Monument Company for a memorial marker that would include the names and dates of all those who are known to be buried at Drakes Creek, not just Anderson ancestors. Since most, if not all of the original markers are cracked, toppled, or unreadable, the family wanted all that are interred here to be remembered.
On Friday, July 26, 2002, the 9tth. Anderson Family Reunion will begin with re-dedication of the Drakes Creek Cemetery. There will be a hayride to the cemetery from Drakes Creek Baptist Church. It is the hope of the Anderson Family that descendants of those buried here will be present to remember and celebrate the lives of our pioneer ancestors. There will be a lunch following the re-dedication at the Kentucky Depot in Stanford.
