Eva Lemmon (later Eva Spade) put in her journal on April 3, 1900. Mrs. Spade buried in Wyuka today. Very windy. A big cortege followed Mrs. S. to her last resting place.
Receceived email from Rogene Johnston with the following:
I finally got to Wyuka cemetery. I asked about a Mrs. William Spade
but the only Spade they had listed in the cemetery was May Spade. I
think this is the one you are interested in but in those days they
didn't put down too much information about the person. Bob will send an
attachment that gives the information they gave me. Born: November 4,
1853; died April 1, 1900, aged 46 years 5 months 21 days; cause of
death, Heart failure. They didn't give any information about family
members. William Spade must not be buried in Wyuka.
They gave us the lot number and told us how to find the grave but when
we got to that location, there was no gravestone for her. Other
gravestones in this location were dated in the late 1890s and others in
the early 1900s so her grave must have been in the open spaces between
other grave markers.
I just read this today, 4-23-05 and realized this can't be William's mother because of the birth date. It must be his first wife. I did find his name on a census somewhere that said that Eva was his 2nd wife. Will correct in system.
Obituary from Nebraska State Journal dated April 2, 1900:
Mrs. William Spade aged forty-seven, died yesterday at 12:30 at her home, Thirtieth and Fair Streets. Mrs. Spade had been suffering from heart disease. She suffered an attack from the ailment yesterday and died two hours later. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 2 o'clock.
Mary A (May) Spade was born Mary Graham in 1853. She had a brother named William Graham who appeared on the 1880 census with her first husband as brother-in-law. He also was living with Joseph and Mary as evidenced by the 1870 census. Note he was only 11 years old. Don't know why he wasn't living with his parents.
Mary A Goddard nee Graham married William Spade in Douglas County, Kansas in 1884. The Kanasa Census of 1885 shows William and Mary living with her children from previous marriage to Joseph Goddard and Nettie Graham who I believe is a sister.. The 1900 census shows William Spade living with his step son Harry Goddard at 1654 30 th st.
