Occupation: broke family tradition of being a "gentleman farmer", becoming a citizen and a tradesman: a draper (dealer in fabrics) in London, which was considered to be demeaning. Residence: left Barley End farm, lived in London during the two dreaded plague years, 1665 and in 1666, the latter year say 68,596 deaths from the plague in London alone. Roger also endured the Great Fire of London in 1666. The ancient interior of the Temple Church contains effigies of 13th century knights. A small office is located in the Quire section, where, in the Register of Burials in the Temple Church, is a thick volume containing old pages with fire-blackened edges from World War II damage glued onto new paper. On a page is the notation: "Roger Duncombe out of the Inner Temple was buried in the Round of the Temple Church on the 15-day of December 1714" The clerk of the Register office mentioned that only members of the Inner and Outer Temple of that time were allowed burial in the Temple Church.
