"Maria was born 3 August 1823, Stratford, West Ham to Aaron CRADDOCK and Eliza Clarke, and died 6 August 1904 at 19 Thurleigh Road, Battersea (Wandsworth Common) aged 80, of independant means, she died of ``senile decay´´. The informant was W H Irons, her son, who was present at her death. Her death certificate reads: Reg Dist Wandsworth, Sub District of West Battersea in the County of London, Maria Clarke Irons -Nee Craddock (widow of Charles Irons) A pencil drawing of Maria as an old lady is in the possession of Johanna Clarke IRONS drawn by CCI in 1871 (according to Constance Mary IRONS). 1851 aged 27, living at 11 Water Street, Brideswell with her husband, Charles Irons, and son Edward. Also 3 lodgers. 1855 Maria wrote a letter to one of her cousins (in OZ?) from 18 Albert Street, nr Barnsbury Road, Finchley and listed at the end the first three of their children, as John and William had not been born by then!!! Transcript of letter from Maria Clarke (Maud) Irons 18 Albert Street Islington London January 29 / 55 My dear Cousin I received your note quite safe containing a collar for which I am very much obliged to you. I should have written before this but could not get the right address. My husband sends his kind love to your father & Mother & Brother & Sisters, & also to your Grandfather & Grandmother & to give his kind regards to all enquiring friends, he thinks they will be very few, as it is so many years since he was at Hexton. he thinks it must be 14 or 15 years ago. I shall be very glad to see you any time you are in London or if you should be coming to Finchley for a short time as I understood Mary Ann to say something about it, I shall be very glad to see you to spend a few days with us if you should come. I have no news to tell that would interest you, so I must conclude with both our loves to you and your family, hoping you & all are quite well as it leaves us all at present. & believe me to be Your affectionate Cousin Maud C. Irons. P&S. I dare say Mary Ann has told you the names of our children if she as not they are Arthur Edward Charles Clarke & Martha Maria The above letter was preserved by Arthur Edward Ward. It was written to someone in Hexton, most probably A.E.W.´s aunt Betsy Olney (who would be 22), less likely her sister (his mother) Martha (17), and not their elder sister Hannah who had emigrated to Australia. Moreover, Betsy is recorded in the census as a dressmaker (and can make collars), Martha only a straw plaiter. In 1855 they have one brother, and their parents William & Mary and grandparents Thomas & Sarah Leach alive, all living in Hexton and all mentioned in this letter. Maud is 31 years old - her husband´s grandparents were Betsy´s great-grandparents, so they were second cousins once removed, by marriage. Mary Ann Olney is in close contact with the Olneys in Hexton: she is living with the Ironses in Finchley in 1851 and 1871. There is no mention of Betsy´s 3-year-old illegitimate daughter. They must have moved later to the Old Barge House where they were in both 1871 and 1881 censuses. Charles was a merchant clerk (on 1881 listed as an accountant) and had an office in London (I guess this is the Barge House itself?)." The above information is from Amanda Kerby's family file. 1881 aged 57, living at "Old Barge Houe Wharf", Upper Ground Street, Southwark with her husband, Charles Irons, children Martha Maria, John Vaughan, William Henry, daughter in law Fanny Elizabeth Irons, granddaughter Maria Vaughan Irons, nephew William Sutherland and general servant Clara Hunt. 1891 aged 67, living at 19 Thurleigh Road, Battersea, London with her husband, Charles Irons, daughter Martha, son William and granddaughter Marjorie E Irons. 1901 aged 77, living at 19 Thurleigh Road, Battersea with her husband, Charles Irons, daughter Martha, son William and granddaughter Marjorie. Also general servant Ethel Sindall. Name entered as "Maude", by which name she was known throughout most of her life.
