Robert II Stewart, King of Scotland was born on 2 March 1315/16 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was the son of Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland and Margorie Bruce, Princess of Scotland. He married, firstly, Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan, daughter of Sir Adam Mure, 1st of Rowallan and Janet Mure, on 22 November 1347, by Papal dispensation, which legitimised their previously born children.
He married, secondly, Eupheme de Ross, daughter of Aodh de Ross, 4th Earl of Ross and Margaret Graham, on 2 May 1355, by Papal dispensation.
He died on 19 April 1390 at age 74 at Dundonald Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was buried at Scone Abbey, Scone, Perthshire, Scotland.
He succeeded to the title of 7th High Steward of Scotland on 9 April 1327. He fought in the Battle of Halidon Hill on 19 July 1333 at Halidon Hill, Scotland, where he was in command. He held the office of Regent of Scotland between 1338 and 1341. He was created 1st Earl of Atholl [Scotland] on 16 February 1341/42. He held the office of Regent of Scotland between 1346 and 1357. He fought in the Battle of Durham on 17 October 1346. He was created 1st Earl of Strathearn [Scotland] in 1358. He abdicated as Earl of Atholl on 31 May 1367. He abdicated as Earl of Strathearn on 18 April 1369. He gained the title of Earl of Strathearn on 4 April 1370. He succeeded to the title of King Robert II of Scotland on 22 February 1371. He was crowned King of Scotland on 26 March 1371 at Scone Abbey, Scone, Perthshire, Scotland.
Before his accession, he had been successively joint and sole regent in David II's absence. During his reign, from 1384, his two sons were the real rulers for their unmilitary father.

1st Stewart king of Scotland
Son of Walter, Steward of Scotland and Marjory Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce. He served as Regent for David II twice, while David was in exile in France and again while imprisoned in England. Robert succeeded David in 1371, and was crowned at Scone on March 26.
His first marriage to Elizabeth Mure and the 9 children of the union were declared illegitimate, as the couple were too closely related. A Papal dispensation was acquired in 1347, but to many it still wasn't enough.
Upon the death of his first wife he married Euphemia Ross, who would become his queen, in 1355. They had four children.
The question of the legitimacy of his first marriage would later play a big part in the succession. Robert is thought to have had 21 or more children in total, including at least 8 illegitimate children by various mistresses. It was said about Robert that "A more tender heart no man could have".
Most of his 19-year reign was troubled by wars he could play little part in. He allowed his son Robert, Earl of Carrick (later Robert III), to act in his stead most of the time. Old and infirm, he died at Dundonald Castle at the age of 74.
