1783 farmed land at Wootton Pilling as tenant of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, assessed at 'a336 14s [the second most valuable property in the parish] Will dated 31 January 1820 ``In the Name of God, Amen. I, Sarah Seckham of the Liberty of Brickenden in the County of Hertford, widow, being, I thank God, of sound and disposing mind and memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, first I desire to be buried at Worden in the County of Bedford, and to be taken there in a Hearse to be drawn by four horses in a decent manner, with as little expense as possible, and that my two Sons SAMUEL SUTTON and RICHARD SECKHAM only attend my funeral; also I direct that the Tomb at Worden aforesaid, under which I am to be buried, be put into substantial repair by my Executor hereinafter named, and that ten pounds or more if necessary be laid out for that purpose, and that in case no Grave Stone shall be put down in my lifetime to the memory of my late brother THOMAS PESTELL, then I hereby direct my said Executor to put down a head, foot and body stone, and to pay the expenses attending the same out of the residue of my personal estate hereinafter bequeathed; and whereas I have a certain sum of money in the three per cent consolidated bank annuities at my own disposal, which is standing in the names of my late brother JOHN PESTELL, my Uncle WILLIAM LONG, and my brother-in-law JOHN BELL, all of whom are now dead, and the same is now become vested in SIR WILLIAM LONG of Kempston House near Bedford, now I do hereby provide and direct that the same be as soon as possible after my decease transferred into the name of my son the said SAMUEL SUTTON, for the purposes of this my will, that is to say, I give and bequeath the yearly sum of twenty pounds, being the Interest of the principal sum of four hundred pounds at five per cent, which I direct my said Son SAMUEL SUTTON to raise out of my monies in the said three per cent consolidated bank Annuities, unto my daughter MARY JUDD during the term of her natural life, to be paid to her by my Executor hereinafter named by half yearly payments, and from and immediately after her decease, I give and bequeath the sum of two hundred pounds, part of the said sum of four hundred pounds principal money, unto her four children, namely ANN, the wife of THOMAS HARRIS, and FRANCES, THOMAS and CATHERINE JUDD, to be divided amongst them in equal shares and to be paid to them on their attaining their respective ages of twenty one years, and in case either or any of them should die in the lifetime of my said daughter, or under the age of twenty one years, then I give and bequeath the share or shares of him, her or them so dying unto the survivor or survivors of them, share and share alike, and to be paid to them when their original shares shall become due and payable by virtue of this my will; and as to the remaining part of the said four hundred pounds, being two hundred pounds, I give and bequeath the same unto my said two Sons SAMUEL SUTTON and RICHARD SECKHAM, equally between them share and share alike; nevertheless it is my will and meaning and I hereby fully authorize and empower my said Son SAMUEL SUTTON to deduct and retain out of the share of my said Son RICHARD SECKHAM all such sum and sums of money, if any, as he my said Son RICHARD SECKHAM shall owe and stand indebted to him my said Son SAMUEL SUTTON at the time of my decease, and in case either of my said Sons shall die in the lifetime of my said daughter MARY JUDD, then I give and bequeath the share of him so dying unto all and every his child and children, equally amongst them and to be paid to them at their respective ages of twenty one years; also I give unto my granddaughter ELIZA SUTTON my silver watch and chain and the seals with the coat of arms upon it, and to my grandson SAMUEL SUTTON my silver seal marked ``SS'b4'b4, which was his grandfather'b4s; also to my granddaughter ANN SUTTON my Mourning ring which I had for my late Father, and to my granddaughter MARIA SUTTON my garnet hoop ring; to my granddaughter ANN HARRIS my mourning ring which I had for the late Mr. Sutton; to my granddaughter FRANCES JUDD my mourning ring which I had for my late sister ELIZABETH PESTELL, and to my granddaughter CATHERINE JUDD my Ear rings with garnet stones; also I give to my said Son SAMUEL SUTTON my silver tankard, two table spoons marked ``SS'b4'b4, my Mahogany Bureau and plain gold ring, during his life, and after his decease I give and bequeath the same to his son SAMUEL; also I give unto my said Son RICHARD SECKHAM my silver coffee pot, two silver table spoons and six silver tea spoons without marks, also my mourning ring which I had for his Father; also I give unto my daughter MARY JUDD all my black Cloaths of every sort and kind, for her own use and benefit; and I give all the residue of my plate, linen, china and wearing apparel not hereby disposed of unto my six granddaughters, namely ANN, FRANCES and CATHERINE JUDD, and ELIZA, ANN and MARIA SUTTON, to be equally shared between them, share and share alike; and as to, for and concerning all the rest and residue of my household furniture and effects, monies in the Public funds at the bank of England and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever, after and subject to the payment of all my just debts, funeral expenses and the charges of proving and executing this my will, I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said two Sons, SAMUEL SUTTON and RICHARD SECKHAM, equally between them for their own use and benefit; and I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my said Son SAMUEL SUTTON sole Executor of this my will, and revoking all former wills by me made, declare this only to be my last Will and Testament; in witness whereof I the said SARAH SECKHAM have to this my last Will and Testament, contained in three sheets of paper, set my hand and seal, that is to say, my hand to each of the two preceding sheets and my hand and seal to this third and last sheet, this thirty first day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty:- SARAH SECKHAM;
