Keats-Rohan identifies Radulf Pincerna as the son of Robert Fitz Erchembald
Assuming he followed a pattern similar to others, when Radulf Pincerna founded an Abbey in 1140 he was in the latter stages of life, perhaps aged 60. This would place is birth at, say, 1080.
Occupation: Pincerna, Butler
Radulf Pincerna was butler to Robert, count of Meulan beforfe 1118; thereafter he was butler to the count's son Robert, earl of Leicester.
Pincerna is the Latin equivalent of the word Butler; it literally means "cupbearer." "In large medieval households the Butler was the person in charge of the wine. Since many powerful nobles lived in fear of being poisoned, this was a position of considerable trust. There used to be many variations in spelling, such as Boteler, Boutillier, Botiller, Butiller, and Botyller. Modern variations include Boutler (France), Buttlar (Germany) and Buteler (Argentina)."
Marriage to Avice
Radulf Pincerna married Avice or Avicia.
In 1140 Radulh Pincerna was the founder of Alcester Abbey, Warwickshire, near his castle at Oversley. He apparently became a monk of the house at that time; certainly his son Robert assumed the position of Butler.
Issue
He had two sons Robert and Geoffrey Labbe.
Robert le Boteler, of Oversley Robert Pincerna, Eldest son of Ralph Pincerna (Butler) of Leicester)
Geoffrey surnamed Labbe.
