King of Bohemia. Born the younger son of Vladislav, House of Premysl, King of Bohemia and Judith von Thuringe, the daughter of a Landgraf. He married, Adelheid von Meissen in 1187, having at least two children before divorcing. He succeeded to the title of Duke of Bohemia in 1192, recognized as ruler of Bohemia by Holy Roman Emperor Henri VI. The following year, however, he joined a conspiracy to bring down the Holy Roman Emperor and the house of Hohenstaufen, and was deposed. In 1196 he forced his brother, duke Vladislav Jindrich, into Moravia, abandoning Bohemia to him, and was again confirmed in his reign by a fellow monarch, Phillip of Swabia, whom he also abandoned, and who also declared him deposed. In 1198, he set aside his first wife in order to marry a princess of Hungary, Constance, with whom he had five children including the future Wenceslas I. He then joined with Otto of Brunswick, and was again recognized as king of Bohemia both by Otto and by his powerful ally, Pope Innocent III and was created King Premysl Ottokar I of Bohemia. In 1212, Ottokar and his heirs were recognized, by the so-called Golden Bull of Sicily, as hereditary Kings of Bohemia, no longer subject to appointment by the Emperor. He died in Ribe, Syddanmark, Denmark at the age of about 75 and was succeeded by his son Wenceslas. (bio by: Iola)
