JOHN THORNTON 1720-90, the eccentric but generous supporter of the first Evangelical movement, was son of Robert Thornton of Clapham Common, and shared his home with WILLIAM WILBERFORCE. John's half sister Hannah married William Wilberforce, uncle of the William Wilberforce of abolition of slavery fame. Bought the Advowson (the ability to give the position of Rector) of Clapham which he presented to his son Samuel, who made two presentations. - his son HenryThornton lived on the west side near Battersea Rise. A Thornton family connection brought William Wilberforce to Clapham and other members of the Sect were drawn to the village to take part in the campaign to abolish the Slave Trade. After his conversion which culminated in 1786, Wilberforce was persuaded to take the leadership of this by a group of Quakers and others who had been working for this crusade and with whom Granville Sharp was connected.
