According to the book, A Foot on Three Daisies, Ambrose took to crime in 1871 and broke into the house of Thomas Stapleton "...he stole a watch, a ring, some material and bits and pieces to do with his trade....and then went on to steal a case of six bottles of cherry brandy from the Great Northern Railway at Hitchin.......it was noted that 'his felonious conduct seems to have been brought about by a want of mental power'...." the vicar Rev.
