Mr W HAWKINS conducted the prosecution; Mr T CHAMBERS defended the prisoner. The prosecutor stated that he was a butcher, at Pirton. On Saturday the 24th April, he was going his round by Offley and Lilley, and employed the prisoner in charge of his horse and cart; he was gone about half an hour, and on returning, he found a piece of pork missing, which he found in the nose bag belonging to the prisoner. The prisoner was given in custody, and on searching him some pig's fry was found in his pocket. He at first denied all knowledge of the pork in the nose bag, but afterwards admitted having taken it, and offered to pay double or treble the value of the pork. Cross-examine by Mr CHAMBERS: Prisoner lent me his horse and cart, and I used to pay him for it. GEORGE TURNER, police constable, corroborated the evidence of the prosecutor respecting the pork. Mr T CHAMBERS briefly addressed the jury, remarking that if the witnesses had not misunderstood the statement of the prisoner (which he contended was probable) he had better have pleaded guilty. Mr ODELL, of Pirton gave the prisoner a good character. Verdict: Guilty with a recommendation to mercy, on account of previous good character.
