Aubrey de Vere, 20th Earl of Oxford was the son of Robert de Vere, 19th Earl of Oxford and Beatrix van Hemmema. He married, firstly, Hon. Anne Bayning, daughter of Paul Bayning, 2nd Viscount Bayning of Sudbury and Penelope Naunton, on 18 June 1647. He married, secondly, Diana Kirke, daughter of George Kirke, before 12 April 1673. He died on 12 March 1702/3.
He succeeded to the title of 20th Earl of Oxford [E., 1142] on 7 August 1632. He gained the rank of Serjeant-Major in 1644 in the service of the Colonel Knightley's Regiment, Dutch army. He gained the rank of Colonel between 1646 and 1650. In 1654 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London as a suspected Royalist. In 1659 he was again imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1660. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Essex from 1660 to February 1667/68. He gained the rank of Colonel from January 1660/61 to 1688 in the service of the Royal Regiment of Horse. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) from January 1669/70 to 1679. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General of Horse and Foot in 1678. He held the office of Envoy Extraordinary to France in 1678. He was Gentleman of the Bedchamber between 1678 and 1685. He held the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber between 1678 and 1685. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Essex between 1688 and 1703. He gained the rank of Colonel between 1688 and 1703 in the service of the Royal Regiment of Horse. He was Gentleman of the Bedchamber between 1689 and 1697. He fought in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. He held the office of Speaker, House of Lords from 1700 to 1701.
