1871 aged 2, living at Broad Oak, Underriver, Seal with parents George and Emma Ranger, and siblings Louis and Louise. 1881 aged 12, living at Broad Oak, Underriver, Seal with his parents, George and Emma Ranger, and brother John. George's father was a farm carter for Lord Derby, and on his father's death, when George was 16, he took over his father's job successfully and his younger brother John became his 'carter's mate'. 1891 aged 22, agricultural labourer living at Broad Oak, Seal, Underriver with his widowed mother, Emma Ranger, and two sisters Louisa and Lucy. They were living in Underriver in the parish of Seal and he was employed by Lord Derby. When Lord Derby died his estate was split up and George had to move on. Worked on several farms in his lifetime, possibly Eltham in Kent, Fairlawn near Shipbourne, Farnham Farm, and Tophill Farm near Langton. Later he moved to Pembury where he worked at Dodhurst Farm. Later he moved to Hawkenbury, where he and his wife Mary lived with their son Harry and daughter in law Mary, which is where he died. He met his wife to be, Mary Ann Harris, when she was working in Kent as a domestic servant. She came from Charlbury, Oxfordshire, daughter of William and Hannah Harris. How they met is unsure, some say Mary was working in Northfleet, Kent. What George would have been doing there we can only guess. However, his sister Lucy was born in Northfleet so perhaps they had friends living there. They married on April 27 1895 at St Mary's, Underriver. 1901 aged 32, living at Woodcocks, Shipbourne, Kent, with his wife Mary and their two children Louisa and Frederick. 1911 aged 42, living at Dodhurst Cottages, Pembury with his wife Mary 38, and children Louisa 15, Frederick 11, Sidney 9 and Albert 5. Dodhurst cottage was a dwelling consisting of 6 rooms. George always maintained that the Ranger family originated in the Low Countries coming to England where they were farmers. There is probably a certain amount of truth in this story but we have not been able to trace the family further back than Michael born somewhere circa 1745.
