CORRESPONDENCE from Bev Baines 6 Nov 2005: "A bit of personal history - Benjamin, that's my Grandad Ben and your 2nd cousin used to be a baker and walked to work over fields every morning. We used to have lovely chats about those days and he was pleased to tell me. He used to describe how it was his job as a young lad to get to the bakery early to take the weavels out of the flour before making the bread! Then at some stage he started farming. He used to tell me tales (some tall, I'm sure) about when they used horses to work the land. He lived at the farm for quite a few years with Lily. And also little Grandad (Frederick, Ben's Dad) lived with them. Dad (Harvey Walker) had a house built next to the farm when he got married to Mum to remain close and work on the farm. As Grandad Ben grew too old to work the farm properly (and having the back of a trailer falling on his foot being the last straw!) Dad took over and Ben and our family swapped houses so we lived at the farm. Neither family was too pleased about it but it was the best thing in order for Dad (Harvey) to carry on working at the farm. I used to spend many evenings sitting outside the farm house with little Grandad while he smoked his pipe and chewed on his mints. He was a lovely old man. His dad was a large strong man and referred to as gramps. Dad has a wonderful photo taken by the local paper of all of them working in the field. There's Gramps, little Grandad, Ben, Harvey and his sister, Sheila. What a great piece of history -four generations captured working the farm. I have such wonderful memories of those times."
