Notities over Ralph BOTELER

According to Stirnet this is Sir Ralph Boteler of Woodhall married to Hawise, daughter of Richard, son of Hugh Gobion.

Ralph le Boteler was born about 1220 in Oversley, Alcester, Warwickshire, England.

He was the son of Maurice le Boteler, of Oversley b: ABT 1185 in Oversley, Alcester, Warwickshire, England [I think there was a missing link here and that he was the grandson of Maurice and son of Ralph 1220]

Before 1244 he married Maud PANTULF , Heiress of Wemme b: ABT 1227 in Wem, Shropshire, England

Ralph Boteler married Maud, dau. and heiress of William Pantulf, by whom he acquired the great lordship of Wemme in the co. of Salop.

1245 Suit over Property
On 24 April 1245 Ralph and his wife Matilda paid a fine of half a mark for a Praecipe to move a law suit from Shropshire to Westminster. At Westminster on 3 Nov 1253 they "sued William del Atre for 7 acres of bose in Wemme, as the right of Matilda, whereof Hugh de Pantun [Pantulf], Matilda's grandfather, was once seized. From Hugh the right descended to William, and from William to Elizabeth and Matilda. Elizabeth died without an heir. [Eyton's Ant. Shropshire, 7:169]. At the time of his death his gross income was L57.5s.2d per year. [Eyton, 7:171].

Service to King
This feudal baron had divers summonses to attend the king, Henry III, in his wars with the Welsh and, adhering faithfully to that monarch against Simon de Montfort and the revolted barons, he was amply rewarded by grants of land and money from the crown.

1281 Death
Ralph le Boteler died 3 July 1281.

He was survived at his decease by his son, William Boteler.
