John Maitland, 1st and last Duke of Lauderdale was born on 24 May 1616. He was the son of John Maitland, 1st Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Isabel Seton. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Murray, Countess of Dysart, daughter of William Murray, 1st Earl of Dysart and Catherine Bruce, on 17 February 1671/72. He married, firstly, Lady Anne Home, daughter of Alexander Home, 1st Earl of Home and Mary Dudley, between August 1632 and September 1632. He died on 24 August 1682 at age 66, without male issue.
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Maitland of Thirlestane, [S., 1590] on 18 January 1645.
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Lauderdale [S., 1624] on 18 January 1645. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount Maitland [S., 1624] on 18 January 1645. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Thirlestane and Boltoun [S., 1624] on 18 January 1645.
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Lauderdale [S., 1616] on 18 January 1645.
Between 1650 and 1659 he was held in the Tower of London, and other prisons. He fought in the Battle of Worcester in 1651, where he was captured by the English.
He held the office of Gentleman of teh Bedchamber between 1660 and 1673.
He held the office of Secretary of State [Scotland] between 1661 and 1680.
He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session between 1661 and 1682.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in January 1660/61.
He held the office of Commissioner of Treasury [Scotland] between 1667 and 1682.
On 16 September 1667 he procured a regrant of his titles with remainder to his daughter Mary but with the power to rescind this regrant, which he exercised in 1675, changing the remainders back to the original heirs male.
He held the office of High Commissioner of Parliament [Scotland] between 1669 and 1674.
He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1672.
He held the office of President of the Council [Scotland] between 1672 and 1678. He was created 1st Viscount Maitland [Scotland] on 26 March 1672.
He was created 1st Lord Thurlestane, Musselburgh and Boultoun [Scotland] on 26 March 1672.
He was created 1st Earl of Lauderdale [Scotland] on 26 March 1672.
He was created 1st Duke of Lauderdale [Scotland] on 26 March 1672.
He was created 1st Marquess of March [Scotland] on 26 March 1672.
He was created 1st Baron Petersham, co. Surrey [England] on 25 June 1674.
He was created 1st Earl of Guilford, co. Surrey [England] on 25 June 1674.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1679.1
