It is supposed that this family is descended from Robert Farrer, a Yorkshireman, who was living at the end of the fifteenth century. His son, Raphe, established himself as a grocer in the City and became a prosperous Freeman. After the dissolution in 1537 he acquired the small priory at Harrold, Bedfordshire, and through purchases and financially rewarding marriages the Farrers built up a substantial estate extending into north Buckinghamshire.
