Emigrated to New Zealand in 1842. On May 1 1842 the barque Sir Charles Forbes 365 tons left Gravesend for Nelson New Zealand. Captain Thomas Bacon, Surgeon William Henry Kater. 169 souls on board, including:- James Ranger age 30, Ag Lab/Stock Manager Wife Ann age 26 Son Henry age 2 Dau Charlotte age 8 months. Arriving in New Zealand on August 22 1842 There were no deaths on the voyage His half brother John Spittle and his wife Charlotte were also on board. Farmed at Waimea West section 22.
1845 census shows that he had 2 sons and 4 daughters. He was a bailiff. The 1849 census has an additional 2 sons, with the ages spread lower than 14. Six of the children did not know how to read, and two knew how to read and write. James' trade was as a labourer. His birth place was Kent, England, and religion was "E" presuming Church of England. He had 2 acres of cleared ground, 1 3/4 cultivated and 1 1/2 wheat. One quarter he had as a garden. He was the tenant of the section, and lived in an earth house that was roofed with thatch. His only animal was a pig.
James appeared on jury lists with different residences and occupations: 1844 - Waimea West - labourer 1845 - Waimea East - labourer 1846 - Waimea East - Farm Bailiff 1847/48 - Hardy St - Brewer 1849/61 - Waimea East - labourer He is listed on the Electoral Roll of 1865/66 as leasing section 101 at Waimea West. He had been crossed off the 1868/69 roll indicating that he had moved. He is not on the Wairau (Blenheim) rolls.

On an average of 7 years to 1835, hops have annually been cultivated in this parish to the extent of 136 6/8 acres: average of hops charged, 110,988 lbs: of duty, 924 pounds 18s.
