THIS WILL was proved as London on the twenty fourth day of April in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and One before the worshipful SAMUEL PEARSON PARSON Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Honorable SIR WILLIAM WYNN KNIGHT also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of JOHN STEVENS and RICHARD STEVENS the Grandsons of the deceased and Executors named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased having been first sworn duly to administer.

Precis of Will dated 26th July 1800 and proved 24th April 1801bequeaths his farm at Norman Street (where he was living) and his farm at Ide Hill (tenanted by John & William Staples and formerly owned by Richard Manlove) to his grandson John Stevens; and his farm at Cross Keys, Sevenoaks (tenanted by William Everest) to his grandson Richard Stevens. An annuity of 10s per week to his son William "not being endowed with sufficient capacity to embark in public business". An annuity to his housekeeper, Sarah Cole, who was to have married his son Edward. His daughters Elizabeth Ranger and Jane Potter, having already received £400 each as a dowry, received 1s. To Anne Clarke, widow of George Clarke, surgeon, £20. Residue to John & Richard Stevens, as executors; William Thompson of Sundridge and William Hall of Brasted as assistants.

A wealthy farmer owning farms in Norman Street Sundridge, Cross Keys Sevenoaks and elsewhere. Shown as Mr John Cogger when he was buried. Fathers name may have been Francis. The Cogger connection . Four generations of Coggers can be traced in the parish of Sundridge (to the west of Sevenoaks) between 1679 and 1732. However, we have found no connection as yet between them and John Cogger, father of Elizabeth Cogger who married Michael Ranger in 1775. The first we know of him is the birth of his daughter, Ann in 1743 (named after his wife). They had 13 children between then and 1763, of whom 8 survived beyond childhood.

John died in 1801 (his wife having died in 1777) and his will, made the year before, was proven four days before his burial. It shows him to be a man of substance, the owner of three farms, two of which were in Sundridge parish and one in Sevenoaks. John himself lived at his farm at Ide Hill, in the south of the parish, while leasing out the other two farms, at nearby Norman Street and at Cross Keys in Sevenoaks (it was possibly at these farms that Michael Ranger was a husbandman, or tenant farmer, perhaps accounting for his move from Sundridge to Sevenoaks between 1776 and 1778). These properties were divided between his two grandsons, John and Richard Stevens, sons of his daughter, Ann. Apart from other legacies, the will makes it clear that his daughter, Elizabeth had received a dowry of £400 on her wedding to Michael Ranger - no small sum in those days!

Mention of Sevenoaks led us to another will, that of John Cogger of Sevenoaks, who died in 1743. His will was made in 1738 and proven the year after his death. He appears to have been a bachelor, and his main legatee was his nephew, William Cogger, who inherited "all my Messuages Tenements Farms Land and premises with their appurtenances lying or being in the County of Kent or elsewhere". Sadly, he does not list these properties, but they give the impression of a man of some wealth. However, significant for our purposes is the fact that he bequeathed £50 to "my nephew John Cogger son of my brother Francis Cogger" We are still looking for proof of this connection, but we believe that Francis Cogger (born 1685, son of yet another John Cogger) had moved to the Ightham/Shipbourne area by 1711. He married Rachel Baldwin of Plaxtol in 1712; she died in 1713 and was buried at Wrotham, but by the time of his death in 1752 Francis was living at Sundridge, possibly with his son - he was buried with his wife at Wrotham. Unfortunately, our researches are hampered by the lack of marriage records for so many members of this family. SOURCE: Simon Ranger Hill, Ranger Newsletter 2

After further research Simon found that Norman Street Farm was not always in the family. It is mentioned in the will of a Thomas Greene of Sevenoaks, Mercer, in 1690, in which he bequeaths to his second son, John, the "messuage called Norman Streete with land belonging at Norman Streete in Sundrich now in occupation of Israell Cranwell, but mortgaged for £200 to Wm Hodsoll" However, in the Sevenoaks Archives there are title deeds for lands at Ide Hill, icl. Norman Street Farm from 1600-1783 which need to be checked.

Whilst searching the Sevenoaks Archives Simon Hill noted a pile of title deeds relating to the Ide Hill area, including Norman Street Farm and Ide Hill Farm, both of which formed a part of what appears to have been called the Everlands Estate. There seems to have been a joint interest in the estate held by T.A.Green and his wife, John Mason, Samuel Davis, Sarah Turney and John Tomlin ("draper of Berkhampstead") and his wife. The estate was sold around 1782 to a Rev Richard Rycroft (of Hanover Square, London), and sold on to Lord Frederick Campbell. Unfortunately, the deeds only go up to 1783, so no inkling of how the farms got into John Cogger's hands, but it is at least evident that they weren't in the family before him. One of the deeds is very thorough, and lists every field with the names of the tenants, but on a cursory inspection, Simon couldn't find any mention of Coggers or Rangers. By 1846 Norman Street Farm was in the hand of the Marchant family (as proven by the Chiddingstone MI - 62. Mary wife of William MARCHANT of Norman Street Farm Sundridge died 18 November 1846 aged 47 years)
