Sudden death of a farmer - On Thursday an inquest was held by Charles Sheppard, Esq., coroner, on the body of Mr ARTHUR BARHAM, a farmer in this parish - CHARLOTTE BARHAM deposed: The deceased was my husband. He was 51 years of age. Yesterday he was about his work and did rather more than usual. He has been and was yesterday in apparently a good state of health. He has been subject to a difficulty in breathing, and has complained of his heart for some years past. This was only occasionally. He has had no medical attendant for a long time. About five o'clock yesterday morning he assisted to move a waggon, and when he came in to tea he complained of a pain in his side, and that he could not take any tea. He did not take any tea. He attributed the pain to the exertion of moving the waggon. He came in again between six and seven o'clock and asked for some brandy. I gave him a glass, and he then went out again and sat on the waggon. He went out about eight the last time and came in again soon afterwards. I was upstairs at needlework and he called to me about half past eight and asked me to put our youngest child's shoes on. I called in reply to him, and soon afterwards the children came in from the garden and asked for their father. One of them said that he was in the little room and they went in there and found him dead. His feet were warm. I unbuttoned his shirt collar and his wristbands and rubbed him, but he was quite dead. On Monday last he was driving from Battle. The horse fell and he was thrown out. He hurt his hand, but he did not complain of anything further. - ALMA CHARLOTTE BARHAM deposed: The deceased was my father. I went into the little parlour about a quarter before nine o'clock last evening to see my father. My little sister told me that he had gone in there. He was in the easy chair. I went up to him and asked him to get up. He gave no answer. I thought he was asleep at first. I put my hand on the side of his face and he felt warm. I did not hear him breathe, and then called my mother. - ROBERT VAILE SKINNER deposed: I am a surgeon practising at Winchelsea. I was sent for to see the deceased last night. I reached here between twelve and one this morning and found him dead and cold. About five years ago I attended him for bronchitis, but I have not attended him since. He was lying back in the chair. I examined the body. There were no marks of violence. The body was quite natural. There is no doubt whatever that the deceased has died from heart disease. There was no indication whatever that deceased died from any other cause. - The Jury returned a verdict of "Death from heart disease".
