Kind(eren):
Constance of Penthièvre (v. 1140 - after June 23, 1184) was a Breton princess, daughter of Alain de Penthièvre , Earl of Richmond , and Berthe de Cornouaille , Duchess of Brittany .
Constance was the daughter of Bertha, daughter of the Duke of Brittany Conan III and Matilda of England , and Alain le Black , Earl of Richmond , the youngest son of Stephen I de Penthièvre and Havoise Guingamp. She was the sister of Duke Conan IV of Brittany and Enoguen, Abbess of Saint-Sulpice.
September 15, 1146 her father died and her mother remarried two years later with Eudon de Porhoët , who became regent of Brittany during the minority of Conan IV.
Weddings
In 1160, while her brother Conan IV had just married Marguerite de Huntingdon, sister of King Malcolm IV of Scotland , a marriage between him and Constance was envisaged. But Constance refused, hoping to marry King Louis VII , widower of Constance of Castile . However, Louis chose to remarry with Adèle de Champagne 1 . According to other historians, it is in 1152/54, after the annulment of the marriage of Louis VII and Aliénor of Aquitaine, that Constance would have sought to marry the King of France. However, this assumption is unlikely.
According to certain genealogies, Constance was married first to William FitzEmperesse, known as "Tournemine", third son of Geoffroy V of Anjou and Mathilde, and younger brother of King Henry II of England, founder of the House of Tournemine. However, there is no evidence of this union, nor indeed of the exact identity of Guillaume "Tournemine", note 1 . If this marriage took place, whatever the exact identity of Guillaume Tournemine, it dates from the marriage of Louis VII and Adèle de Champagne, November 13, 1160.
Constance then married Alain III, viscount of Rohan, with whom she founded the Notre-Dame Abbey of Bon-Repos on June 23, 1184.
Descendancy
If Constance is the wife of Guillaume Tournemine, she is the mother of:
Olivier I st Tournemine (died before 1205), who married Edie (or Eline) Penthièvre, daughter Rivallon Penthièvre and sister of Geoffrey III of Penthièvre , and had: Olivier II de Tournemine (died v. 1232), lord of La Hunaudaye ;
Geoffroy I st Tournemine;
Tournemine Stone;
Margilie de Tournemine;
Sybil of Tournemine.
Geoffroy de Tournemine.
From Alain III , viscount of Rohan , she had:
Alain IV ;
Guillaume ;
Josselin, who married Mathilde de Montfort, daughter of William II de Montfort 4 ;
Marguerite, who married Hervé I st , Leon Lord ;
Alix;
Constance, who married Eudon de Pontchâteau.
Notes
↑ Several theories often contradicted by the historical reality, were issued as to the identity of the founder of the House of Tournemine. Anatole de Barthélemy cites some of them: (1) it would be a certain Edouard Tournemine, nephew of the King of England , assisted Pierre Mauclerc against the King of France and who would have married the younger sister of Pierre, Constance ; (2) Edward Tournemine, an English captain, was sent to Britain by Henry II of England to help Conan IV in his fight against his father-in-law Eudon, and the grateful duke gave him land and the hand of his sister Constance; (3) The first sire of Tournemine married the younger sister of Guy de Thouars , third husband ofConstance of Brittany ; (4) William FitzEmperesse , younger brother of Henry II, would have married Constance, sister of Conan IV
