"...served for many years, and gained rapid promotion in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, meeting his Irish wife Mary O'Callaghan whilst guarding the Sackville-West's house in Guernsey, where Mary was in service.
He also served at The Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. ......William had a colourful life in the army, and was known as a very gentle (as much as a regimental sergeant major could be!) and sociable man.
When he settled in Eastbourne the family lived at a property called The Circus in Eastbourne, which was on the site of a Martello Tower and still had a canon in the garden, much to the amusement of the children.
William became the Chairman and Adjutant Quarter-Master of the Eastbourne Home Guard and also founded the Eastbourne Rovers Athletics Club, which still runs today. He was awarded the MBE for long service. My husband has all his medals, which we could scan, except the MBE but we have a photo of it....
