Notities over John Cooper

Deacon John Cooper was with Rev. Lothrop's group of Separatists in Scituate, Massachusetts. He probably came with him from Southwark, England, across the Thames River from London.

He married Priscilla Carpenter, the widow of William Wright, on 27 Nov 1634 at Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

According to Plymouth Historian, William T. Davis, Priscilla was the mother or grandmother of Richard Cooper [1639-1724]. It seems quite clear by his will that Dea. John Cooper had no children. Davis also believed that Priscilla Carpenter and William Wright were the parents of Richard Wright, who married Hester Cooke. It seems most likely that Richard Cooper was a son of Humilitie Cooper and Richard Wright, who were probably living in the same household... like siblings. Humilitie was "sent for" back to England and died there before 1651. She had an adult baptism at Holy Trinity of the Minories in London in 1639, right about the time that Richard Cooper was born.

Deacon John Cooper may have been a first cousin to Humilitie Cooper, although much older than her. Humilitie Cooper was a daughter of Robert Cooper & Joan Greshom, and a granddaughter of Edmund Cooper & Mary Wyne of Henlow, Bedfordshire, England. It is likely that Deacon John Cooper was also a grandson of Edmund Cooper & Mary Wyne, perhaps by their son John Cooper who moved to London. Lydia Cooper, wife of Nathaniel Morton, was Dea. John Cooper's sister. Perhaps also Ann Cooper, wife of Ephraim Morton. They may have all been members of the Separatist group in Southwark. That may have been where the passengers of the "Speedwell" went after the "Mayflower" set sail for America.
