May remembers as a child, that they slept 3 girls to a bed and everyday the bed had to be made immaculately and a board was dragged across it to make sure there were no wrinkles. Everyone in the family had their jobs and Mays' job was to read the newspaper to her father, cover to cover, every day - a habit she never lost and could still read without glasses to the end of her life. She was also one of the family charged with the responsibility for running the dairy, another skill she took with her into married life, building a dairy herd from other peoples unwanted calves. She loved horse-riding, however apart from the draught horses, the farm never kept a horse just for the pleasure of riding for many years, the oft quoted reason being "One horse eats as much grass as six cows". Mays' outdoor life was equally reflected by the little importance she placed on cooking and housework, that lot usually falling to Arthur, at least in later years. May was a very sensitive, generous, caring person and cautious which often led to her being quite anxious (about nearly anything -but when it was discovered in her old age that she had suffered a thyroid deficiency for many years, the thyroxin caused her to be much calmer). However, she didn't trust electricity, and even though she lived only metres from a main power line, refused to have it in her house. Paint was out also-she couldn't stand the smell. Neither did she like travelling over bridges. She didn't go to weddings or funerals (the only ones being her own-not even when her only son got married and her husband died). She did however love people and kept up correspondence with many and was always happy to have visitors 'as long as they took her as they found her'. When she was younger, she loved going to the Euchre (Cards) nights at Bauple Hall, and was happy to go to a dance but Jim would have to make sure she was seated a good half hour before anyone else arrived because she couldn't bear the thought of walking into a room with people looking at her. Florence used to say about her and Arthur, "they can't live with each other and they can't live without each other". She could be a very difficult person at times, but underneath it was a good hearted person. Cause of Death: Stroke
