He was a collier; so calling himself in deeds.
1653, Jan. 3. He and wife Mary bought of Robert Coles, his house and home
lot next Thomas Olney's house lot and near the Pound.
1655, May 25. He was appointed by the Court of Commissioners to keep a
house of entertainment. A convenient sign was to be set out at the most
perspicuous place of said house to give notice to strangers.
1656, Apr. 15. His wife Mary gave notice of landing six ankers of sack and
later in same year gave notice of nine ankers of sack.
1657, May 29. He gave notice of three ankers sack.
1659, Sep. 13. He gave notice of three-quarter casks wine, and an anker
liquor, and next year 66 gallons wine and two ankers liquor.
1665, Feb. 19. In a division of lands he drew lot No. 27.
1666, Dec. 26. He made over part of his estate to Town Council for use of
wife Mary and her children.
1667, May 1. He and wife Mary having petitioned Assembly for a divorce and final parting, it was not granted so far as to allow either to marry again,
though they may live apart.
1672, Nov. 6. Information having been presented to Assembly showing that
Captain John Greene had given a bill of divorce to Mary Pray and Richard
Pray, the act was discountenanced there being no authority for any Assistant
to grant a divorce.
1675, May 21. He deeded son John, my dwelling house standing at Loquassuck with half purchase right of land and meadow.
1676, Aug. 14. He was one of those "who staid and went not away" in King
Philip's War, and so had a share in the disposition of the Indian captives
whose services were sold for a number of years.
1678, Apr. 15. He deeded son Ephraim half a tract of meadow and upland.
1679, Jul. 1. Taxed 6s. 3d., with wife Mary and son Ephraim.
1680, Mar. 16. He petitioned Assembly to remit sentence of General Court of Trials (in October, 1678) against him for £10, by him forfeited, being bound and not attending said Court. He pleading God's hand upon him by sickness, and considering poverty of petitioner, his request was granted.
1681, Apr. 27. His wife Mary was licensed by Town Council to keep a public
house of entertainment for the relieving of travelers and strangers, providing
both for horse and man, as also by retail to sell unto the inhabitants beer,
wine, or strong liquor for one whole year, she not to suffer any unlawful
game in the house nor any evil rule there. She was to pay 20s. for license, but being willing to give liberty to Town for Town meetings to be kept there, the Council accepted in lieu of 20s.
1685, Jan. 27. He, "aged 55 or thereabouts," testified that he had heard Robert Cole say that he had sold Valentine Whitman his share of meadow at
Mashapog.
1686, Jan. 20. He deeded son William a house and lot formerly belonging to
Robert Cole, bounded partly by lot of Thomas Olney, Jr., also upland and
meadow on a small brook.
1687, Sep. 1. Taxed 9d.
1688, Oct. 20. He and wife Elizabeth, late wife to Benjamin Hearnden, deceased (and executrix of will dated 1686, Feb. 1), deeded to her son Isaac
Hearnden, the homestead farm, orchard, &c, given her by late husband's
will for her life.
1688, Oct. 20. His wife Elizabeth quitclaimed all her right to thirds of husband's lands, and obliged herself to sign a more ample instrument when
thereunto legally required.
