Zachariah Rhodes, born 1603, in England, was drowned "off Pawtuxet Shoare," Rhode Island, 1668. He settled in Rehoboth, but moved to Providence finally going to Pawtuxet, where he remained. He held many political offices, being commissioner four years bet. 1659 and 1663, Constable 1660, Deputy 1664 and 1665, and Town Treasurer 1665, besides other positions of public trust. He md. Joanna, the dau. of William and Christian (Peak) Arnold, born 27 Feb 1617, and died later than 1692. Their dau. Rebecca md. Nicholas Power II.

1643. His estate was given as £50, in a list of fifty-eight inhabitants
of Rehoboth.
1644, Jun 80. He drew a share of woodland in a division at this date.
1644, Jul 3. He and twenty-nine others signed a compact: "We whose
names are underwritten, being by the Providence of God inhabitants of
Seacunk, intending there to settle, do covenant and bind ourselves one to
another," &c. The government was to rest in nine persons chosen from
the inhabitants, and it was agreed "to assist them according to our ability
and estate, and to give timely notice unto them of any such thing as in our
conscience may prove dangerous unto the plantation, and this combination
to continue until we shall subject ourselves jointly to some other government."

To youngest son Peleg, said house and land at decease of his mother, but if it so fall out that my eldest son now living with his grand-father Arnold, be not comfortably provided for and settled upon his grand-father's land after the latter's decease, then my eldest son to have equal share with youngest in house and land, at decease of their mother. If any dau. marry or match themselves with any contrary to the mind of their mother, or or my two friends the overseers, they shall have anything or not according as their mother says. Malachi, £20, at my death, or when he is twenty-one, which cometh first,
and like legacies to sons Zachariah, John and Peleg at twenty-one, and to
daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Rebecca, at twenty-one or marriage. If she die before children are twenty-one, the amounts are to go into the hands of
the overseers. As husband Zachariah Rhodes did not dispose clearly to
daughters, she provides that any daughter dying, the others shall possess
their sisters part of her or her husband's legacies, and if any son die the
others shall have his portion.
1681, Oct 26. On petition of Joanna Reape, wife of Samuel Reape, of Pawtuxet, the Assembly considering "the deplorable estate of said Joanna,
being left destitute by her said husband Samuel Reape," &c., order that all
estate of Samuel Reape be sequestered for use of Joanna for her life, and
appointed her son-in-law Daniel Williams, and son John Rhodes, feofees in
trust to take possession in her behalf and receive rents for her use.
1687, Sep 1. Joanna Reape taxed 7s.
1687. Her ratable estate: 2 acres orchard, 6 acres planting land, 20
acres pasture, 13 acres meadow.
1693, Feb 11. Joanna Reape and her son Peleg Rhodes sold John Fowler, of
Providence, an eighth of a thirteenth right in land west side of Pauchasset
River, for a valuable sum.
No relationship is known to exist between Zachariah Rhodes and Walter
Rhodes who was early of Providence for a period.
ZACHARIAH RHODES.
Zachariah Rhodes was born in 1603, in the southern part of England. He was a settler in Rehoboth, Mass., where his estate was rated in 1643 at £50. 3 Jul 1644, he, with twenty-nine others, signed the Seekonk Compact. He afterwards removed to Pawtuxtet Rhode Island, where he became a large landholder. His name occurs frequently in the public records as Freeman, Commissioner, Constable, Juryman, Deputy and as a member of various committees. He was Town Treasurer in 1665, and was also in the Town Council. He md. Joanna, dau. of William and Christian (Peake) Arnold, and had eight children. Of these, four sons and two daus. md. and left numerous descendants. His death occurred in the spring of 1667, when he was drowned "off Pawtuxtet shoare". His wife survived him many years and died aft. 1692.
Malachi Rhodes, second son of Zachariah, md. Mary Carder and had a dau. Mary who became the wife of Richard Brown, son of Henry. The son, William Brown, born 3 Jun 1705, md. Susannah Dexter, and had a dau., Freelove, who was md. to James Brown, son of Deputy Governor Elisha.
Rebekah Rhodes, third dau. of Zachariah, was early left a widow by the death of her husband, Nicholas Power. She md. second, Daniel Williams, son of Roger, and had seven children. Of these, a son, Roger, born May 1680, had a dau., Rebecca Williams, who md. David Thayer. The latter were the parents of Williams Thayer, who md. Sarah Adams, and had a dau. Harriott, who became the wife of the Hon. Patrick Brown, of Nassau, New Providence. By the marriage of their dau., Sophia Augustus, to John Carter Brown, a descendant in the sixth generation of Rebekah Rhodes and her first husband, Nicholas Power, the two lines of the posterity of Rebecca Rhodes were re-united.
John Rhodes, fourth son of Zachariah, born In 1658, md. Waite, dau, of Resolved and Mercy (Williams) Waterman, and had a son, William Rhodes, born 14 Jul 1695, who md. 18 Dec 1721, Mary, dau. of Nehemiah and Rachel (Mann) Sheldon. Their eldest child, Waitstill Rhodes, born 8 Feb
1722, md. Jeremiah Brown, son of Elder James and, second, George Corlis.
