Samuel Gorton was the son of Thomas Gorton, husbandman, and Anne, of Gorton. Thomas was probably son of Thomas, who was taxed at Gorton 1543, and he was probably son of Thomas of Gorton taxed 1524. They were members of an ancient family settled at Gorton in Manchester, which occurs there in 1332 and 1421.

Notes for Thomas Gorton
He was a husbandman, who "being greeved with sickness in body" wrote his will on 31 Dec 1610. It was proved on 26 Jan 1610-11. His wife, Anne, and eldest son, Nicholas, were named executors. [159, p. 5]
"Samuel Gorton's ancestry beyond his immediate parents is somewhat conjectural, but the following assumptions were made by a genealogist [NEHGS, 82: 186, 339-341] after searching the Lancashire records rather thoroughly:
