Samuel Gorton was the son of Thomas Gorton, husbandman, and Anne, of Gorton. Thomas was probably son of Thomas, who was taxed at Gorton 1543, and he was probably son of Thomas of Gorton taxed 1524. They were members of an ancient family settled at Gorton in Manchester, which occurs there in 1332 and 1421.

Thomas Gorton, probably a son of Thomas Gorton, of Gorton, in the parish of Manchester, co. Lancaster, husbandman, the testator of 31 Dec 1610, was bur. 3 Jan 1610-11. He md. first Elizabeth ____, who was bur. 29 Aug 1578; and secondly, abt. 1581, Anne ____, who survived him and was bur. 1 Nov 1623.

Notes for Thomas Gorton
He was a husbandman, who "being greeved with sickness in body" wrote his will on 31 Dec 1610. It was proved on 26 Jan 1610-11. His wife, Anne, and eldest son, Nicholas, were named executors. [159, p. 5]

"Samuel Gorton's ancestry beyond his immediate parents is somewhat conjectural, but the following assumptions were made by a genealogist [NEHGS, 82: 186, 339-341] after searching the Lancashire records rather thoroughly:
1. Thomas Gorton of Gorton, parish of Manchester, co. Lancaster, a descendant of the early Gortons of Gorton and of Aspull, taxed 12d in 1524 on goods valued at 40s. His wife's name unknown. He was probably the father of:
2. Thomas Gorton of Gorton, assessed 8d on goods valued at £4 in 1543. His wife's name unkknown. He was probably the father of
