John b, pr. at Dorchester, ab. 165T, d. Mar. 18, 1683, a. 26. He did not remove to Rehoboth with the rest of his father's family, but was left at Dorchester, with Mr. John Gnrnell, and was there brought up at the tanner's business. Mr. Clapp gave me these facts, and also the following copy of an extract from the Church records of Dorchester.
"John, son of Sampson Mason, 23 (7) 1660, being about 4 years old when he was baptized, because his father was and is, in his judgment, against the baptizing of infants; yet he being at Seconck (Rehoboth), do permit that brother Gurnell, with whom the child doth dwell, may bring it forth to be baptized." Taken into the watch care of the church, under circumstances of some peculiarity, their subsequent records show that John's walk was not always orderly. However, he so far secured the confidence of the widow of Mr. Gurnell, that, by her will she entailed her real estate upon him, to go to the poor of Dorchester upon his decease without issue.
