"Melzar Canright seeks divorce from wife of two years; cruelty charged
"Wife, Who Husband Says Tried to Get His Property, is Opposing Separation
Decree
"Family skeletons were dragged from their closets and rattled about in court here today. The occasion is the contested divorce suit of Melzar Canright against his wife, Mary Canright. Mrs. Canright has filed an answer to her husband's bill for divorce and seeks to restrain the granting of these papers.
"Mr. and Mrs. Canright were married November 27, 1915. Mr. Canright in his bill of complaint sets up that his wife has no love or consideration for him. He states that shortly after their marriage that his wife insisted that he sign over his property to her and when he refused he says she flew in a rage.
"The husband charges that his wife knocked him down and kicked him in the face; tore off his necktie and threw it onto the floor. His wife charges that on one occasion he placed his arm about the waist of a neighbor and kissed her, while the two were standing on the porch of the Canright home.
"Miss Grace Darling of Upton avenue appeared as a witness for Mr. Canright this morning. She stated that she called at the Canright home to borrow some Chinese curios for a fair that was to be given at the Upton avenue M.E. church. She says that while Mr. Canright was willing to lend her the curios in accordance with a previous understanding, that Mrs. Canright objected and before the argument ended had called both Miss Darling and her husband, liars. Mrs. Canright is said to have wound up her demonstration by kicking Miss Darling's muff and grip in which she intended to carry the curios, onto the front porch.
"Character witnesses were placed on the stand by Attorney Robert Kirschman, counsel for Mr. Canright. These were Mr. and Mrs Warren Wheaton, Mrs. Oliver Ford, Mrs. Naomi S. Smith and Dr. John C. Dockery, all of Urbandale and told of Mr. Canright's good character and of the esteem in which he is held in his community.
"Attorney Vernor W. Main appears for Mrs. Canright. It is expected that the case will be concluded this afternoon."
An interesting newspaper article about his young wife abusing him.
