Isabel (died 3 Feb 1245), sister of Walter de Bolebec and an Aunt of his [Robert de Vere's] elder brother's 1st wife. [Burke's Peerage]
"Aubrey de Vere, not yet second Earl of Oxford, was son of Aubrey the first Earl and the hereditary Great Chamberlain, by his third wife. The families of Bolebec and Vere occur so much in the early history of Bucks, and Beds, that a sketch pedigree252 will be found useful. The first Earl Aubrey had
the wardship of Isabel de Bolebec the younger, and by a not infrequent practice md. her as a great heiress to his eldest son, who is found in this entry to be paying scutage on ten knights' fees for her Bucks, lands; on her death without issue, her lands passed to her aunts, whose husbands are each found holding 5 knights of the barony in 1210/12; 253 one of these is Robert de Vere the third Earl who thus secured to the family at least a half of the Bolebec inheritance. (Compare N/viiiE/8)."

"This crisis in the Veres' fortunes must be dated in or just before 1207.
It is evident that the heirs of the Countess were her father's sisters, Isabel
and a younger sister. Isabel, who was probably a maiden aunt, well over
forty,1 was at once sought in marriage as 'dau. of Hugh and sister and heir of Walter de Bolebec,' by Robert de Ver, younger brother to the Earl (Pipe Roll, 9 John). She retorted, clearly, by offering 200 and three palfreys that she might not be 'distrained' to marry by the King or any other lord (ibid.).2
Robert, however, md. her and was holding, in 1211, her moiety of the Bolebec barony.3 He succeeded to the earldom and was father by her of the next earl, Hugh. There were thus two successive earls, each of whom md. an heiress, named Isabel de Bolebec. This singular fact has been hitherto unsuspected. From the Bolebecs the Veres claimed to inherit a titular barony of Bolebec, to which they added the 'fancy' title of 'Viscount Bolebec.'
It should be added that the second Isabel, in 1207, sought permission
inter alia to levy 'rationabili auxilio de omnibus militibus et libere tenentibus
suis ad finem istum acquietandum," which permission she received early in that year.4
"This throws a valuable light on the 'aids' mentioned in our record as given to holders of lands and on those referred to as similarly given in the returns to the Inquest of Sheriffs (1170), where we even find them levied from tenants to relieve lords from their indebtedness to Jews.5
The Bolebec pedigree, hitherto obscure, can now be stated in chart
form as follows:
1 For her father Hugh was dead, we saw, in 1166.
2 See Madox' Exchequer (1711), p. 428 (her sister is there mentioned).
3 "cum una filiarum [sic] Walteri de Bolebec" (Red Book, p. 138). It looks as
if 'filiarum' were a mistake for 'sororum.' Her sister is proved by Plac. Abb.
(pp. 69, 87) to have been Constance, wife of Elias de Beauchamp (see p. xlviii below).
