Ltr from Agnes Paston to William Paston I: Perhaps 1440, 20 Apr Dear husband, I recommend me to you, &c. Blessed be God, I send you good tidings of the comming and the bringing home of the gentlewoman (1) that ye weeten of fro Reedham this same night, according to pointment that ye made therefor yourself. And as for the first acquaintanace between John Paston and the said gentlewoman, she made him gentle cheer in gentle wise, and said he was verily your son. And so I hope there shall need no great treaty betwixt them. The parson of Stockton (2) told me if ye would buyen her a gown, her mother would give thereto a goodly fur. The gown needeth for to be had, and of colour it would be a goodly blue or else a bright sanguine. I pray you do buyen for me two pipes of gold. Your stews do well. The Holy Trinity have you in governance, Written at Paston in haste the Wednesday next after Deus qui errantiblus, (3) for default of a good secretary, (4) &c. Your, Agnes Paston (1) Margaret, daughter of John Mautby, esq of Mautby near Yarmouth, who died in 1433. Her mother, Margery, was the daughter of John Berney, esq of Reedham, which is some 8 miles south-west of Mautby and 21 in a straight line from Paston. Margaret was born there. This John Berney died in 1440 (2) five miles south of Reedham (3) The point of these words is not clear, for the letter is written in a neat, evidently practised hand, which seems to be that of the clerk who wrote most of a letters by William Paston I.
