Notes from Dianna Nading: William Downing was born in 1762 in Bart Township, PA, the youngest son of William and Ellen (John) Downing. He was raised in Bart Township, Lancaster county, PA, in a strict Quaker environment. In 1781 he was md. to Phoebe Beckett, dau. of Samuel and Mary Beckett, and the couple had eight children William, jointly with his brother Samuel, had inherited land and mills (grist and saw mills) when their father died in 1788. The will indicated that the brothers and their heirs and assigns were to 'share and share alike the land, Merchant, Grist, and Saw Mills'. At the time of his father's death, William was 26 years old and had been md. seven years, having four children. No record indicates whether the partnership was dissolved, but William move to Frederick county, Virginia, sometime after 1788 (probably 1791). On 7 Nov 1791, a certificate of membership for the family was granted at the Hopewell Friends Meeting (Quaker) indicating a transfer from the Sadsbury Friends congregation in Lancaster county, PA. Certificates were granted to William, his wife Phoebe, and his children: Ruth, Eleanor, Mary, John,Sarah, and Phoebe. The History of Hopewell Friends shows that William was indeed an active member of the congregation, serving on numerous committees, including one to visit friends who had been dismissed. Daus. Ruth and Eleanor were both md. at Hopewell, and William and Pheobe were listed as witnesses to many weddings of other members. William Downing Jr. was born in 1762 at Bart Twp, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, British America. He md. Phebe Beckett, dau. of Samuel Beckett and Mary (?), on 20 Dec 1781 at New Garden MM, Chester, Pennsylvania, British America. William Downing Jr. died on 4 Feb 1842 at Highland, Ohio, British America. He was bur. aft. 4 Feb 1842 at Hicksite Qkr Cem, Paint Twp., Pennsylvania, British America.

"William downing was born the 5th child of Thomas and Thomazine Downing, Quakers, who had emigrated from England abt. 1718. Thomas was a successful farmer and businessman who established an industrial complex of water powered mills in East Caln township, PA. This area became first
known as Milltown, and later, became the city of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, named for the family.
William grew up in the Concord, Sadsbury, and East Caln Townships in a
strict Quaker environment.
At Uwchlan meeting, William md. Ellen John. She died prior to 1765,
and William again was md. 19 Dec 1765, at New Garden meeting, to
Margaret Miller, widow of Samuel. William had 8 children by Ellen, none
by Margaret.
The will of his father, Thomas, states: "And whereas I have already
conveyed unto my son, William Downing, the Dwelling House where he now
liveth with the water, corn, and grist mill and One Hundred and Fifty
acres of Land in the townbship of Bart in the county of Lancaster and took
Bond of Fifty Pounds from him which Bond I order my Executor to deliver to
my said son William without money."
