Notes for John Damon:
John and his sister, Hannah, sailed from England to Plymouth Colony about 1628 in the care of their uncle, William Gilson. In 1633 the moved to Scituate where they lived on the second lot of land on Kent Street. When William died in 1639, he left to "my nephew John Damon my lot of land on the third cliff, after the next crop is taken off".John took over his uncle's position as windmiller. When his Aunt Frances died in 1649 John received his uncle's lot on Kent Street. His wife Katherine died shortly after the birth of Zachariah in 1655.Having five little children, John then married Martha Howland. John was a deputy to the Colony court, one of the Council of War, a Selectman and performed his full part in those other public services to which he was from time to time assigned.
Meanwhile the colony had been living peacefully with the local Indians until competition for land caused a local chief called King Philip to begin a number of terrorizing raids on the settlers. When a Council of War was established in 1653, John was made a Sergeant. He took command of the Scituate Militia under Miles Standish in 1666, holding this position until 1669. The Indians stepped up their raids leaving many towns in ruins and nearly 1000 settlers dead. On March 20, 1676 a group of 15 men from Scituate were killed in a battle. On April 21, the indians attached again but were repelled. On May 20, the Indians burned 23 buildings and killed a number of settlers. When King Philip's War ended in August 1676, half of the men of Scituate were dead or scalped. Sergeant John Damon and his son John were two of these casualties.
On October 3, 1676 the widow Martha petitioned the court to take inventory of the estate of Sergeant John Damon. On the same date her son Daniel, aged 23 years, requested the court to take inventory of the estate of his brother, John Jr. The inventory of the goods and chattels, and that of the land including improvements, of Sgt. John was recorded by the court on October 23 1676. The goods and chattels totaled 202 pounds, 7 shillings and 11 pence; the land totalled 170 pounds and 10 shillings.
Letters of administration were granted to Martha on July 3, 1677. The disposition of the estate was recorded on October 18, 1677.The widow received her third. The children's share (John and Martha had six from their marriage) of the goods and chattels was 134 pounds 18 shillings 7 pence. Out of this was allowed 9 pounds for bringing up the weak one (Ebenezer) and 3 pounds 11 shillings 8 pence for bringing up the youngest, Martha. These sums were over and above the normal portion they should receive. Each of the ten younger received 20 pounds and Daniel, the oldest son, received 40 pounds. On March 2, 1679 the court was satisfied that Martha had paid to Daniel, and the three other children which John had by his first wife, the sums which were due to them. Also on the same date the court ordered that the four daughters - Silence, Margaret, Hannah, and Martha should have 10 pounds paid to each of them when they came of age or were married.
The third lot of real estate which Martha received was hers as long as she remained a widow. The court,on June 1, 1680, noting that Martha had married Peter Bacon, ordered her to vacate the premises, but keeping her one-third of the profits. Zachariah received the lot of land on the cliff as his share, paying to Martha 3 pounds for improvements. Ebenezer's share in Connihasset was to go to Peter and Martha Bacon, also 3 pounds out of John's land on the cliff if they brought up Ebenezer to be 21.
According to the History of Hingham Genealogical section, Martha and Peter had a daughter, Susannah, born November 4, 1682; died July 6, 1718. Martha died in 1732 in Hingham where she and Peter had gone to live.

John Damon of Scituate and his sister Hannah were nephew and niece of William Gilson, who came to New England by 1632, and probably a little earlier. Some sources say that Damon came to New England with his uncle, and this may well be correct, but there is no evidence directly supporting this, and there are many cases of members of the same family coming to New England many years apart.”

From Deane’s History of Scituate:
John Daman, with his sister Hannah, came into Scituate before 1633. They were then minors, and under the guardianship of Mr William Gillson, their Uncle. We understand that they were very young at that time, from the circumstance, that having been made the heirs of Mr Gillson, they were not established in their inheritance by the Court until 1649. ‘John and Hannah Daman are allowed by the Court to be lawful heirs of William Gillson, it being proved by diverse persons that Gillson had often said that he intended to make these (his sister’s children) his heirs.’ (Colony Records, 1649). John Daman succeeded to the residence of his uncle, on Kent street, the second lot from Satuit brook, (Edward Foster’s being the first).
The first mill in the Town, was a wind mill, on the third cliff. It was erected by William Gillson in 1636, on the North-east part of the cliff. After his decease in 1639, it became the property of John Daman, his nephew. [2, 3]
