John was probably born along the South Branch of the Potomac River near Looney's Creek ( present Petersburg, West Virginia) or was brought there at an early age by his parents.
If the family migrated into North Carolina in the 1750s or 60s, as many of their friends did, then he was very likely somewhere along the Yadkin River with the Crouch family during that time period.
Returning with the others to the South Branch about 1765 from North Carolina, John would have been a grown man and a seasoned frontiersman.
In all likelihood, John had been orphaned (or at least lost his father) sometime between 1750-1765. It is possible that he had been raised by a step-father up to the time of his return, his mother having remarried, possibly to John Harris in North Carolina.
The foregoing would provide a link to James who remained in North Carolina, Henry and John.
In 1774, John served in Dunmore's War under Captain Joseph Bowman. At the time he was living in the "lower district" of Dunmore County, Virginia.
In 1786, we have reference to a land record for John Delia in Hardy County, Va.
p.100
In 1788, John DeLay bought land in Hardy county from a Mr. Hornbach. This piece of land had been purchased by Hornbach from Lord Fairfax in 1773. The same record contains the spellings of DeLay, Dela, and Delea for John's surname.
In 1792 John had two sons over the age of 21 living with him. Apparently neither was married. It is from this record that we have speculated as to John's approximate time of birth. In that same year, 1792, we find John, with his wife Sarah, in Bourbon County, Ky.
On August 19, 1794, John bought land on the east side of Hinkston Creek, Fork of Licking , Bourbon Co., Ky, corner to Henry DeLay. Both Henry and John bought their adjoining piece s of land on the same day, from the same people. They were Henry Wilson and wife, Francy, and from Philemon Thomas and his wife Mary.
In 1800 and 1810 John Delay appears in the Bourbon County, Ky. census. Was this really John Jr. who dropped the "jr." upon the death of his father? The fact that this John is shown with one son between the ages of 16-26 would indicate that he might have been the Jr.
