I have traced all lines back to the late 1700's and my mother's side to 1175, the Vivians, who were related to the Kings and Queens of England, in particular Henry II AND Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was my 25th great-grand-mother, a fascinating lady. When you get a chance, read her life story by a writer named Alison Wier.
Eleanor was an extraordinarily powerful woman, she was the duchess of Aquitaine and Queen of France (1137 - 1152) with her marriage to Louis VII and Queen of England after her marriage to Henry. She was the Countess of Saintonge, Angoumois, Limousin, Auvergne, Bordeaux, Agen. Eleanor had 10 children, three of whom were crowned kings of England (Henry, Richard, and John). One of her daus., Matilda, md. Henry the Lion of Bavaria and Saxony and was the mother of Otto of Brunswick; another dau. Eleanor wed King Alfonso VIII of Castile and had Blanche, the mother of Louis IX of France; her dau. Jeanne was the wife of King William II of Sicily and after his death, Count Raymond VIof Toulouse.

The south of France spoke langue d’oc (now called Occitan) which extended as far north as Limousin, about 100 kilometers from Poitiers, while the north spoke langue d’oïl; the two languages were virtually incomprehensible, intensifying the regional factionalism. Eleanor probably spoke them both because she grew up in Poitiers.
The character of her grand-father, the Troubadour Duke, left her unprepared for the austerity of the northern court in Paris. She was a carefree and robust and even argumentative southerner. Her father, before his departure on his pilgrimage, left her in the care of Louis VI, King of France. William X could not choose one of the lords of nearby counties. They were too rapacious and unfriendly.
Her girlhood ended when she md. Louis at the age of thirteen on 25 Jul 1137 in the Cathedral of Bordeaux. He was only a couple of years older. Louis went south for the wedding with five hundred powerful knights, the best in his realm, as a show of strength to his future unruly subjects.
