Notities over James Barber

Emigrated in 1633 from England to Boston, Mass. Bay Colony in British Colony of New England, then moved to current Rhode Island in 1635. He obtained half share in property in Westerly, R.I. in 1661.

Possibility exists that family emigrated together, son (possibly William Barber (abt 1618 to Unk), father, and mother (Unknown-Barber abt 1600 - abt 1638). A daughter Mary, was also born in 1618 and should have also accompanied the family.

1) The first landing of English settlers was in 1620, at Plymouth Rock, about 30 miles south of the current city of Boston. Other ships landed in the 1620s in the same area, but they were small in numbers and considered insignificant. Almost all who survived, moved to the present day site of Boston harbor. There were also advance partes of Puritans, seeking sites for living in the years 1624 to 1629. Historians estimated that the total number of immigrants from England until 1630, numbered less than 500. The first mass exodus (approx. 1000 settlers) from England (Purtains) landed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (also called New England and referred to as the "New World") area in 1630. Boston so named on 7 Sep 1630 and founded on 17 Sep 1630.
2) If James Barber emigrated from England in 1633, it was impossible for James to be born in Newport in 1620, as recorded in some family trees. Secondly there were no Europeans residing in Newport (Acquidneck Island) in 1620, other than a few Dutch explorers.
3) Massachusetts was located in the British Colony of New England and was called the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630-1691).
