Jim entered the service Oct. 2, 1959. He trained at Ft. Ord, CA and Fr. Bragg, N.C. He was in the 82nd Airborne and went to Kreu Nach, Germany in 1960. In 1965 he went to Viet Nam as an Advisor to the Army of the Army of the Republic of Viet Nam, the 22nd ARVN inf. Brigade, for 1 1/2 Yrs as Sgt. After his discharge he re-assigned at Ft. Eustis, VA. When he discharged he was the proud possessof of the Silver Star; the Bronze Medal; the Purple Heart; CIB; Parachute Badge; Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam war, he served first as an MP in Germany, then as one of the LRP Rangers. Jim spent three tours in Vietnam. He came home highly involved in drugs. After the war he purchased his motorcycle and became a nomad for a period of years. After spending two stints in prison for selling drugs, at the age of 50 he finally decided it was time to straighten his life out. Tending to be an alcoholic, he quit drinking when he was 57, and has been clean for a year at this writting (April 2001)

In Dec 2010, Jim subcommed to death by alcoholism. Jim had recently revealed to his sister, Bonnie, that he didn't really see much use in living anymore. He had fallen at home and cut his leg very deep, but did not seek medical attention and eventually developed gangarine. Finally, with the help of his brothers Bill & Jim Darrel, and the prompting by Bonnie, he went to the VA. Unfortunately, it was too late. He was receiving medical attention at home by a visiting nurse, who found him dead in his bed one morning.
