Gerrit Bröker started working as a bakers helper at age 12. Was mobilized during the 1St. World War in the Dutch Militia and served as a cook. Moved to Utrecht around 1920 and was employed as a salesman. Moved to Amsterdam and worked in a bread factory. In 1936, started his own grocery store in Amsterdam, Reestraat 8, which he operated until he immigrated to Canada in 1952 at the age of 59. His oldest daughter, Catharina, married a Canadian soldier after the war (Arthur Ross) and went to Canada in 1946. He had two jobs in Canada, as a cook in Essondale, a mental hospital in Port Coquitlam and he retired from the Canadian Pacific Railway, where he worked in the yard. 5 years before his death he managed to retire the mortgage on his property at 3019 Dewdney Trunk Rd. Port Coquitlam, B.C> Canada.
He had a vast knowledge of world history and politics. He was a patient, kind and righteous man.
I am thankful and happy that he was my father.
Elizabeth Clarke Bröker.
