From a family history compiled by David E. Bartlow of Beaverton, OR, "After his father James' [Barkelow] death, Johnson Barkelow, et. al. (his brothers, sisters and mother, all named) sold the gristmill, sawmill and two acres to Joseph Briggs, 19 Feb. 1798 (recorded 17 Sep. 1798). There were no recorded witnesses.
"That transaction gave Johnson Barkelow, already married to Ruth [Stout],enough money to begin speculative purchases in the Military Lands of the NW Territory near Portsmouth, OH after the admittance of Ohio to the Union in 1803. Most of his dealings were with Stephen Colvin in 1804 - 1806." The obituary for Susannah Barklow Hannahs states that she and her husband (John Hannahs) families were two of the first four white families in Greenup Co., KY, so Johnson Barkelow must have been one of the first settlers into that area. The last known transaction by Johnson Barkelow was registered in Scioto Co., 24 September 1806, the same day his son Edward married Ruth Patton. Shortly after that Johnson died. His will was probated back in Hampshire Co., VA 19 September 1808.
After his death, his widow Ruth moved closer to her son Edward back in Greenup Co. It was a more established community and probably safer from attacks from Indians. She and Edward are listed next to each other in the 1810 census, Greenup Co., no township listed. Her daughter, Susannah, married John Hannahs in 1812. Ruth gave permission to wed, signing as mother of Susannah. By 1820 the families of both John Hannahs and Ruth Barkelow with two teenage sons are still in Greenup Co., but Edward had moved to Portsmouth where job opportunities in iron ore quarries and smelting furnaces were developing.
In 1830 John Hannahs was still in Greenup and Ruth was also in Greenup Co., living with her youngestson, Stout. Then, according to the DAR applications of Mrs Agnes Barklow Roe and Alice Etna Barkow Wilson, Ruth died in 1837. John Hannahs must have died sometime around then too, because by 1840, Susannah has moved to Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH and is a young widow with several children.
Susannah died in 1843, leaving her children as orphans. Her brother Edward had moved on to LickingCo., OH. Her brother, Stout, had been in Lewis Co., KY in 1840 but may have come to Portsmouth about this time. He is listed in Portsmouth in 1850. When Susannah died, her oldest daughter, Ruth, was 27 and must have taken over the raising of the younger children. It was probably Ruth Hannahs who cut out the clippings of the obituaries on Susannah Barklow Hannahs which were found in the scrapbook passed down to Susannah's greatgranddaughter, Grace Shepard.
In theGreenlawn Cemetery where Susannah Hannahs is buried, there is a marker for IdaE Barklow right next to the one for Susannah.
