Cleopatra IV (Greek : Κλεοπάτρα) was Queen of Egypt briefly from 116-115 BC, jointly with her husband Ptolemy IX Lathyros. She later became queen consort of Syria as the wife of Antiochus IX Cyzicenus. [1] [2]

Biography

Cleopatra IV was the daughter of Ptolemy VIII Physcon and Cleopatra III of Egypt. She was born between 138 and 135 BC. She was the sister of Ptolemy IX, Ptolemy X, Cleopatra Selene I and Tryphanea.

Cleopatra IV married her brother Ptolemy IX Lathyros when he was still a prince in ca 119/118 BC. Cleopatra IV may be the mother of Ptolemy XII Auletus and Ptolemy of Cyprus, although an unnamed concubine could be the mother of these two men as well.[1]

In ca 115 BC, Cleopatra III forced Cleopatra IV and Ptolemy IX to divorce. She replaced Cleopatra IV with her sister Cleopatra Selene.[3]

Cleopatra IV fled Egypt and went to Cyprus, where she married Antiochus IX Cyzicenus and brought him the army of Antiochus VIII Grypus which she had convinced to follow her. Antiochus IX Cyzicenus (Greek : Αντίοχος ΙΧ Κυζικηνός) was the half brother of the king of Syria, Antiochus VIII Grypus (Greek : Γρύπος). Antiochus VIII Gryphus fought Antiochus IX Cyzicenus and eventually chased him to Antioch. Antiochus VIII Gryphus was married to Cleopatra IV's sister Tryphaena. Tryphaena decided that Cleopatra IV should die and over the protests of her husband summoned some soldiers and had Cleopatra IV murdered in the sanctuary of Daphne in Antioch.

Tryphaena [ca. 140 - 111/112 BCE; executed]

Daughter of Ptolemy VIII & Cleopatra III.

Sister of Ptolemy IX & Ptolemy X.

Cousin & first wife of Antiochus VIII.

Mother of Seleucus VI, Antiochus XI, Philip I, Demetrius III & Antiochus XII.

Ptolemaic princess who fueled the internecine feud that fragmented the Seleucid dynasty in the late 2nd c. BCE. In 124 BCE when Cleopatra II returned to Egypt after years of exile in Syria, she married her oldest Ptolemaic granddaughter [Tryphaena] to her oldest Seleucid grandson [Antiochus VIII Grypus]. Years later (114 BCE), when Tryphaena's younger sister [Cleopatra IV] was married to her husband's sibling rival [Antiochus IX], Tryphaena saw her as a threat to her own sons' claim to the Syrian throne. So she had her sister assassinated at the shrine of Daphne near Antioch (112 BCE). In retaliation, her widowed brother-in-law had her executed, sparking open civil war between her children & her sister's son.

From wikipedia:

The daughter of Ptolemy VIII Physcon and Cleopatra III, sister of Ptolemy IX Lathyros, Ptolemy X Alexander I, Cleopatra IV and Cleopatra Selene I [1]. If this Tryphaena also bore the name Cleopatra, has not been attested. This Tryphaena may have been born in early 140 or 141 BC. She married Antiochus VIII Grypus, king of Syria, in 124 BC, and bore him five sons: Seleucus VI Epiphanes, the twin Antiochus XI Epiphanes and Philip I Philadelphus, Demetrius III Eucaerus, and Antiochus XII Dionysus. The couple also had a daughter called Laodice. Tryphaena was killed in Antioch (Greek : Αντιόχεια), capital of Syria, by Antiochus IX Cyzicenus, as a revenge for his own wife's (Cleopatra IV) death by her husband Grypus (in 111 BC).

Cleopatra Selene I (Greek:η Κλεοπάτρα Σελήνη) was the daughter of Ptolemy VIII Physcon by his niece Cleopatra III of Egypt. She was queen consort to Ptolemy IX Lathyros of Egypt, and later queen of Syria, wife of three different kings.

Initially she was only called Selene and added the Ptolemaic throne name Cleopatra after her marriage with Lathyros.[1] In Egypt, she was married to Lathyros after his wife, her sister Cleopatra IV, was pushed out by her mother (115 B.C.).[2] She was not made co-ruler, unlike the many sister-wives of Ptolemaic kings. She bore Lathyros Berenice III and two sons,[3] perhaps Ptolemy XII and another son, named also Ptolemy. (All the male kings and princes in Ptolemaic dynasty were named Ptolemy, as the founder of the dynasty, Ptolemy I (Greek : Πτολεμαίος, which meant "warrior"), who was one the generals of Alexander the Great).

In 107 B.C., as relations between Lathyros and his mother and co-ruler, Cleopatra III, were getting worse, Cleopatra's III intrigues forced Lathyros to leave Egypt and his wife. He went to Cyprus to raise an army, and then to south Syria. From there, he tried, in 103 B.C., to invade Egypt. Cleopatra III set an alliance with one of the two quarreling kings of Syria, Antiochus VIII Grypus, and gave him Cleopatra Selene I as his wife.[4] Grypus' previous wife, Cleopatra Tryphaena,[5] who was Cleopatra Selene's I older sister, had been killed in 111 B.C. by Grypus' stepbrother Antiochus IX Cyzicenus.

In Syria, the civil war between Grypus and Cyzicenus over the throne in Antioch lasted until 96 B.C., and exhausted financially the country. In 96 b.C. Grypus was assassinated in Antioch, and, so, Cyzicenus captured the capital and married Cleopatra Selene I. (Cyzicenus had been married with Cleopatra Selene's I older sister, Cleopatra IV, but she was killed by Grypus in 112 B.C.)

However, Cyzicenus was not to live for a long time. Grypus had five sons with Cleopatra Tryphaena and all of them wanted the throne of Antioch. In 95 B.C., Cyzicenus was killed during a battle with Seleucus VI Epiphanes, the older son of Grypus.

After Cyzicenus death, his son with Cleopatra IV, Antiochus X Eusebes, married his stepmother, Cleopatra Selene I, and regained Antioch again, while Seleucus VI was killed. Against what was expected, the marriage was "real" and Cleopatra Selene I bore two sons, and one of them was the later Antiochus XIII Asiaticus.

Antiochus X was killed either in 92 B.C. in a battle with the Parthians, or in 83 B.C. After his death Cleopatra Selene I feared for her safety, left Syria and stayed in Cilicia.

After the assassination of her nephew Ptolemy XI Alexander II (80 B.C.) Cleopatra Selene I was the only surviving legitimate member of the Ptolemaic family. She claimed the throne of Egypt for her sons from her fourth marriage, but the people of Alexandria chose the illegitimate Ptolemy XII Auletes as new king. Cleopatra Selene I sent her sons to Rome to present their claims before the senate, but they had no success and had to return home two years later.[6] Finally, in 69 B.C. the Armenian king Tigranes the Great besieged Cleopatra Selene I in Ptolemais, seized the old Queen after the capture of the city and killed her brutally in Seleucia.[7]

One year later, the Romans disrupted the Armenian state, and Cleopatra Selene I's son, Antiochus XIII, the last king of the Seleucid dynasty, tried unsuccessfully to unify the state. Finally, in 63 B.C., the Romans captured Syria and the Hellenistic state that Seleucus I Nicator (Greek :Σέλευκος Νικάτωρ) created 240 years ago, became part of Rome.
