He died in the notorious concentration camp Neuengamme near Hamburg. He was moved from the Dutch concentration camp of Amersfoort to Neuengamme on December 18th 1942. He died on January 8th 1943, so just three weeks later. His death was properly reported at the town hall of Bergedorf (Germany), and the official cause of death was "heart failure, failure of the blood circulation, and pneumonia". That cause of death was completely bogus, the real reason were the appalling living conditions in the camp. However his mother (a widow by then) was officially informed about his death, and she put a death notice in the local newspaper 'Arnhemsche Courant' on January 15th 1943.
