10-10-1853 naar Noord America
Here is some information I know of Johanna van Melis. She married Laurens Van der Zanden 28 Jan 1853. They immigrated to America with Lauren’s children from his first marriage - Anton and Cornelia. They arrive in New York in June of 1854. This according to Lauren’s declaration of intent which he filed on the 7th of November 1854 in Brown County, WI. Johanna and Lauren’s and family are found in the 1855 Census in the Town of Green Bay, Brown county, WI. In the 1860 Census they are living in the same area. In 1870, the family is living in the same area, but now Cornelia has been married and is not living at home. However, someone new is living with them. A seven year old, Irish girl named Maggie Mc Cabe. Her parents are neighbors to the van der Zanden. It appears Maggie’s mother died in childbirth and the baby, Maggie, is being raised by Johanna.
Between 1870 and 1880 Laurence passes away. In the 1880 census, Johanna moves into the City of Green Bay, Brown County, WI. Maggie is living with her.
In the 1900 census, Johanna is living in the City of De Pere, Brown County, WI, 3rd ward, with her son Anton and his family. On the census, it states that she has been in the United Stares for 46 years and that she cannot read, write or speak English.
On the 15th of December 1902, Johanna dies from pneumonia at her home in Green Bay, Brown County, WI. She is buried in the Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Green Bay, Brown County, WI.
