Henry was from 1216 to 1272 King of England. He succeeded his father at the age of 9.
Henry was crowned twice: on 28 October 1216 in the Cathedral of Gloucester and on 17 may 1220 in Westminster Abbey. To 1227 was the Government of the young King observed by Regents, chosen by the English barons. First it was that William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, later Peter des Roches, the Bishop of Winchester. In 1219 the Pope was his guardian, with the result that he granted the church a large influence in England.
Also the reign of this Henry was characterized by many struggles. In 1216/1217 he had to defend his authority against the later French King Louis VIII. He surrounded himself with foreign advisors, who came to England in connection with his marriage to Eleanor of Provence.
The influences and of the Pope, in addition to his transgressions of the Magna Carta, which his father under duress of the barons should have signs, did him no good. His foreign policy took a lot of money and delivered little on. This all together spawned a conflict with the barons, who wanted more influence in the Government. The opposition was led by his brother-in-law Simon de Montfort.
In 1258 was Henry forced the ' Oxford Provisions ' to sign and he had to surrender much of his power. Henry wished to keep, however, not here, which led to a civil war. He was defeated in the battle of Lewes in 1264 and jailed. Simon de Montfort called the first English Parliament assembled.
