Killed by A Car - Martin Gelock Meets Death on West Bridge Street - Steps upon Tracks - Wagon Maker Fails to See Approach of Trolley - Hurrying to Reach Home After Day's Work Well Known Holland Resident is Run Down
While running to catch a street car about 6 o'clock last night, Martin Gelock, aged sixty-eight years, was run over by a Lafayette and Stocking street car at Bridge and Front streets. He received injuries from which he died at Butterworth hospital at 8 o'clock. Gelock was employed at the wagon factory of H. E. Barkley on North Front street as a wagonmaker, and left the shop when the 6 o'clock whistle blew. He hurried to the corner of Front and West Bridge streets, where he endeavoured to catch an eastbound Fifth avenue car. He stepped between the westbound tracks without observing the approach of a Lafayette and Stocking car, No. 312, which was proceeding westward, and was struck by it, sustaining a fractured skill, a broken leg and internal injuries.
Detective Garret Doyle and Patrolman J. M. Smith were near the scene of the accident and immediately called for the ambulance. They carried the man into Wolf's drug store to await the arrival of the ambulance, which hurried the man to the hospital. He was taken immediately to the operating room, but his injuries were severe and he died two hours later without regaining consciousness.
DID NOT SEE CAR
Persons who were near at the time of the accident say that the car was proceeding at a slow rate of speed and that the man acted as if he did not observe the westbound car at all, being anxious to catch the Fifth avenue car. Cornoner LeRoy was summoned and viewed the remains at the hospital, after which he permitted them to be taken to the home. he impaneled a jury this morning and will hold an inquest next week. Surviving are a widow, a daughter, Maude of this city, and three sons, Martin, Peter and Walter McDonald, the latter a stepson. Peter and Walter are in Palestine, TX and the others reside at home in this city. Mr. Gelock was one of the old residents of the city, haveing settled here on his arrival from the old country fifty three years ago. he was favorably known among the old settlers and in the neighborhood in which he lived. The funeral arrangements have not been completed.
