William went to Groningen to study* (enrolled there on 17 September 1773, at the age of about 21). His parents did not approve of his marriage to Maria Rembertina, and they refused to countenance or assist him or his family, undoubtedly motivating him to remain in Holland the rest of his life. He and his children had now become thoroughly Dutch. He lived in a house on Oosterstraat in Groningen, as did his father-in-law and brother-in-law Anton Adriaan van Iddekinge.
* The university of Groningen was founded on 23 August 1614, but the city had a great tradition in education even before then. The Sint Maartenschool, a so-called Latin School, was famous throughout the country and even further: people came from as far away as France, Italy, Great Britain and Poland to study here with Groningers from the city and province.
The university began with six professors for the faculties of Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology. The first Rector Magnificus was Ubbo Emmius (1547-1625), who was also a professor of Greek and History.
