OBITUARY
Loraine Alice Thalheim, 84, Long Island, died Nov. 21 at the
Harlan County Hospital in Alma, Neb.
Born Aug. 25, 1922, in Long Island, she was the daughter of
Adrian Cornelius and Grace A.(Schemper) Van Kooten. She spent her entire life in the Long Island area, attending Long Island schools and graduating with the class of 1940.
On June 12, 1940, she was married to Verlyn Thalheim at her parents' home in Long Island. When her children were young,
Mrs. Thalheim was very involvedin their school and sports activities, as well as in those of her community. In her later years, she continued to be an avid sports fan, following the sporting events of her grandchildren. In 2001, she and her husband were named Northern Valley Sports Fans of the Year.
She was a member of the Norton and Alma Bowling Leagues, the
Alma Ladies' Golf League, the Long Island Homemakers Club,
the Bridge Club and the Golden Hour Circle. She also served on the board at the Colonial Villa in Alma. She was a lifelong member of the Luctor Christian Reformed
Church, where she served as church organist since the age of 14. She also sang in the church choir and in church cantatas. Mrs. Thalheim enjoyed volunteer work and helped at the Andbe Home in Norton and Colonial Villa in Alma.
She also volunteered at the Long Island Library and read
books to students at the Northern Valley schools.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bernard Van Kooten and Duane Van Kooten; and five sisters, Pauline Navis, Hattie Erickson, Cornelia Rupke, Clara Voorman and Laverne Van Kooten.
Survivors include her husband Verlyn of the home in Long Island; a son, Kent and Belinda Thalheim, Long Island; two daughters, Patricia and Gary Hammond,Long Island and Verlaine and Melvin Schooler, Logan; a brother, Allen and Lucille Van Kooten, Concordia; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Van Kooten,Hays and Donna Fae Van Kooten,
Long Island; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday at Luctor Christian Reformed Church with the Reverend Jeff Van Der Weele officiating. The congregation sang "Doxology" and "We Have Heard the Joyful Sound". A special organ selection,
"The Lord's Prayer", was presented by Helen Van Kooten.
Casket bearers were Trevor Hammond, Brandon Hammond,
Rebekah Mussman, Austin Thalheim, Rachel Martin and
Avery Thalheim. Burial was in the Long Island Cemetery.
