Evert Brusse moved to the Netherlands East Indies in 1866 as a teacher and later became principal of the elementary school in Palembang. In 1884 he became administrator for the Dutch colonial government.
In the Dutch Colonies it was common in the 17th and 18th centuries to use a double surname to improve ones standing in society.
Evert Brusse started to use the double surname ASBEEK BRUSSE in 1867. (one year after his arrival in the Colonies).
This is the first time this surname is being used. Later his brothers Petrus and Jan, who lived in Amsterdam, started also to use the surname ASBEEK BRUSSE.
